Storage was a key aspect to the design. The owners wanted to maximize all space and this was accomplished through proper space planning. The husband does a lot of cooking and having a larger stove and oversized hood meet his needs. Also space was designed for a prep sink area. They have large extended family meals and having the additional prep area and counter space will make this a much easier thing to accomplish. The style was one of contrast. The owners wanted to have the counter tops and cabinets work off of each other, therefore the contrast with the light colored island and the dark espresso stained maple cabinets. To take it one step further, a light colored Caesar stone counter top was used for the main cabinets and incredible black mosaic granite was use on the island. To pull both of the surfaces together, we used a 1x2 off set glass tile to pull colors from the island counter to the Caesar stone counter tops. The flooring was a 3/8 top nail red oak to tie in with the existing flooring in the rest of the house. All of this was accomplished while leaving an existing skylight. With well placed recessed lighting, the entire project met every one of the owners needs. *Winner of the 2009 NARI META Bronze Award*
