We spent a lot of time discussing the design and materials for replacing the old deck which was attached to the ledger board on a three foot overhanging sun room. They recommended using New Castle 14 gauge steel beams as joists running through the overhang mounted on the 2x6 wall behind the brick wall which was ingenious to bring it under new deck building code and also providing additional support to the sunroom overhang. The joists have triple cross bracing. The other two competing bids would not do this; rather, they proposed installing steel posts three feet away from the wall mounted on the concrete patio 14 feet below and using Fortress beams for the joists not attached to the house. Crippen built the opposite supports on 6 inch steel posts with steel cross bracing mounted on concrete pillars poured in the ground. All steel is powder coated and guaranteed for 50 years. Thie decking is composite, and the deck is designed to support 200 pounds per square foot. The Dunwoody City inspector told me on final inspection he was very impressed with the design and construction quality.

My experience with Crippen Woodworks was nothing short of superb! From Charlie, the owner to Paige in the office, Fidel as Project Manager, Douglas, the crew chief and all of his workers and DJ on follow up and close out. What an incredible team pulled together for my deck rebuild. Each were very communicative, professional and thorough in every aspect of the project including the city permit process. They even coordinated the under deck system to ensure a smooth installation with the new deck. Every question I asked was answered thoughtfully and I was never made to feel guilty about asking. The quality of workmanship is the best I have experienced since moving to Atlanta more than 32 years ago and I am extremely happy with the final product. I loved Douglas’ answer when I ask him why he like to work with Charlie, he said: “He always buys the highest quality products and has everything onsite and ready to go at the start of the project, so everything goes smoothly”. I highly recommend Crippen and know you will not be dissatisfied.

From Paige whom I first spoke with, to Charlie Crippen and the project manager Fidel (and his entire crew) were very impressive, professional, very helpful and a pleasure to engage with. The project was more extensive than I had initially anticipated before Charlie's onsite visit, but he and everyone else were very supportive without any pressure and they were all accommodating to my needs throughout the entire process. Their professionalism is impressive and I will definitely call Charlie again when I'm planing to remodel my screened-in porch.

Talking to Charlie Crippen about a new deck was refreshing. Not your typical salesman. You don't get a low base price, then have to add on all the pieces you want. Charlie tells you what the total price will be and what it includes so there are no surprises at the end. We were comfortable doing business with him. The crew came out every day ready to work and, except for a lunch break, worked steadily until quitting time (or, for us, until the rain came almost every afternoon!). The whole process was pretty painless and the results are solid and beautiful.
