Is there anything I can do from inside my attic to battle ice dams? I'll worry about preventing them next, for now I have them and want to speed up their melt. Getting up to the gutter is not a safe option right now, so I'm wondering if there is anything I can do from the attic that won't make things worse.

We're opening a door off the back of our house and would love some advice on choosing the wood type. We're in the northeast. Door will face north and open to a deck. It will have a small portico above it and a screen door. It will be off our dining room so aesthetics are a consideration. We're going with either a 15 or 18 light, so lots of glass. Really wondering if fir or pine will work or if it's worth the $ for Oak or Mahogany. It will be stained dark.

We keep a spray bottle filled with the solution below on the counter and use it as needed. We apply sealer once a year.

•1/2 cup rubbing alcohol
•2 cups water
•8 drops dawn dish soap
