Karlovec & Company was tasked with designing and installing a railing system and bathroom retrofits for a client who recently had a stroke. To make matters more challenging the house is one of the original 1920's-built Van Sweringen Demonstration Homes in Shaker Heights, OH.
Our client's left side was dramatically impacted but his right side was not. We had to design and implement solutions to allow him to go up the front stairs and down the back stairs so he could use his strong right side whether he was ascending or descending stairs.
We are happy to report that he is making great progress under the care of his physical therapist and with strong family support. Since the railings were installed he has moved out of the living room and is able to once again sleep and bathe in his own room on the second floor of the home.
While not fully ADA-compliant (it was not possible), through careful consideration, creative design and old world craftsmanship we made a positive impact for someone in need.
