Are your customers telling you the whole truth?
More than just a contractor: How to stand outFebruary 25th, 2015 by
Although your children’s obsessions with the latest trends in music, fashion and toys may indicate otherwise, standing out from the crowd is actually extremely important and something that all contractors should prioritize to improve business.
Take a minute and think about it – what can you offer customers that no other contractors in the area can? Lower prices, a wider range of services, higher quality products? Or nothing? If you’re leaning toward the last option, then it is time for you to start thinking about how to make your contracting services appear especially unique and valuable to homeowners and businesses.
“What can you offer that no other contractors in the area can?”
Discovering what makes you stand out
The best way for you to determine what you can offer customers that others can’t is to pull together your team and discuss it. Electricians, plumbers, suppliers and everyone else who makes up the foundation of your team are the people who can explain to you what it is about your business that is, or can be, unique. When you have everyone together, determine four things: Who your target demographic is, the main reasons why these people will benefit from choosing you, descriptions of the products and services you provide and lastly, what makes your contracting business stand out from the rest.
So what are the different areas where your company may stand out to customers? The products and services that you offer could be a good place to start. Are you offering to tackle a remodeling project that no one else will, or maybe your completion of projects is much more extensive than the competition? For example, say the market where you’re located is flooded with contractors who specialize in kitchen remodels. If you enter that area as someone whose expertise lies in bedroom renovation, then your services are going to be extremely valuable.
But maybe you live in an area where the services you offer are just about the same as every contractor around. Well, now you’re going to have to find some other way to stand out. For example, you could offer the best of the best in customer service to attract business. By explaining what you offer and charge clearly from the start, always taking customers’ needs into account and thanking them for their business, you could stand out as the friendliest contractor around, and subsequently pick up a few new customers.
When you’ve identified what areas of your business make it unique, start focusing on how to make people aware of those special qualities that make you better than the competition. And when you are explaining these things, be sure to be as clear and concise as possible.
In order for people to understand what sets your business apart, they’re going to have to believe what you’re saying. Ultimately, you’re not the only contractor out there advertising services, so make sure you’re selling something unique and irresistible to your customers.
