Guildmaster Q&A

Company History

Eberle Remodeling was founded in Sacramento, CA in 1985. In 1992 the company incorporated. Now in their 27th year in business, residential remodeling is the sole focus. Eberle Remodeling is known as the premier residential remodeling firm in the Sacramento area. The company has won 49 NARI CotY awards in design and construction categories on the local, regional, & national levels, as well as winning various other industry awards. Aside from creating award-winning projects, stellar customer satisfaction ratings provide further testament to Eberle Remodeling's commitment to providing their clients with the best value for their remodeling dollars.

Scope of Work

Roughly 15 years ago, the company became exclusively a Design-Build firm. Eberle Remodeling is a full-service remodeling company and primarily specializes in the design & remodeling of kitchens, baths, room additions, and whole house remodels.

Recent Projects

Recent projects included a NARI local, award-winning kitchen remodel in the $40,000 - $80,000 category. Also recently completed is another award-winning project in the Residential Interior, under $100,000 category. In addition, a + $500,000 whole house remodel was just completed. This project consisted of a kitchen remodel, a family room addition, dining room addition, bathroom remodeling, as well as flooring throughout.

Typical Workload

Typically, Eberle Remodeling runs 5-10 projects at a time, of all sizes, both large & small, & everything in between.

Team Makeup

Kent Eberle performs the design, estimating and sales functions for the company, thereby holding overhead costs down. A controller / office manager handles the office functions, while a production manager and numerous multi-faceted remodeling specialists (all long-term employees) handle the various remodeling tasks, including demolition, foundation, framing, masonry, window & door installations, finish carpentry, electrical & appliance installations, minor HVAC work, & sometimes drywall, & painting. They also employ long-term subcontractors primarily per installation of the finishes, such as cabinets, countertops and flooring.

Personal

Many years ago, Kent was trained as a physical education teacher and looks at the remodeling process as an educational process. The more informed the Eberle Remodeling client is, the greater the success of the project. Consequently, Eberle Remodeling goes to great lengths to ensure that their clients are educated, not only about the products, but also about the process. Creating realistic expectations also goes a long way toward ensuring the success of a project.

More than 90% of your clients would recommend your firm to a friend. How do you earn such high praise from your customers?

Eberle Remodeling has created satisfied clients by focusing on the details. The devil is in the details and Eberle Remodeling tries to keep the devil away by focusing on the extensive communication of the details and by thoroughly educating the client. In addition, they always strive to do what we say we are going to do....in a word, they have "integrity". Our Guild Quality ratings also reveal a 99.25% trust rating from our past clients who responded to the surveys. Trust is what remodeling is all about. If you don't trust the folks you have working for you, it's not going to be a good process.

Client Profile

Eberle Remodeling works primarily in the greater Sacramento area and they try to stay within 30 - 40 miles, or so, of their office. Their client base comes from all types of professions, with referrals & repeat business making up the bulk of their projects.

Approach to Working With Clients

Most folks have a very good idea of what they want & what they like. Eberle Remodeling's focus is to act as a guide for their clients, to bring out the best in what their client wants and improve on their vision. Their goal is to have everything decided & dialed in with respect to the design, the product and the entire scope of the work, before they begin construction. Making decisions on the fly can make for a stressful and drawn out remodel process. Doing the details up front, prior to construction, is absolutely the best way to minimize problems once construction starts.

Contract Structure

Eberle Remodeling prefers to do fixed-price contracts, although on occasion they'll do a time and material (T&M) contract. Fixed price contracts allow for dialing in as many of the details & costs in advance of construction. Although, a T&M contract is especially effective when they have a client who can't make up their mind or changes their mind daily. It's extremely difficult to schedule on projects like this, so it takes more patience from both parties.

How do you use technology in your work?

Eberle Remodeling uses computers and cell phones. They have a large HD TV in their conference room to display CAD drawings in 3-D. It's extremely effective and impresses clients with the "vision" for their projects. They use e-mail to communicate and update their clients, even if it's just checking in or confirming decisions that might have just been made recently.

Ongoing Staff Training and Development

Eberle Remodeling has in-house safety training meetings and views educational training tapes on a bi-weekly basis. They also discuss client interactions, clean up, building code requirements, and methods of ensuring quality

Motivating Employees

They motivate their employees by patting them on the back when a job is well done, through continuing education, by allowing them to take the time to do quality, award-winning work and by compensating them fairly (equitable wages, health care contributions, 401(k), gas / vehicle allowance).

Why are you a builder?

Truthfully, about 30 years ago after college, Kent needed a job. However, after working in the trades for several years, he found that he enjoyed being outside and working with his hands, designing in the field, and figuring things out. Owning a full service remodeling business is a lot of hard work, it's not for someone who wants to just put in their time and collect a check. There are so many hats to wear and there's so much to learn in every aspect of the business. There's never a dull moment or a want for something to do. Doing Design-Build allows for a creative outlet. It demands even more creativity to design to a budget. This is definitely a challenge on every project.

Building is a notoriously demanding profession. How do you avoid burnout?

Kent makes it a priority to work out at least 3 times per week. It definitely improves his mental outlook.

What should clients bring to the table and contribute during the construction process?

Clients should enter the construction process with an open mind. They should be aware that there will be disruptions and that there will still be decisions to make once walls are opened up and discover what's within them.

How do you market your company?

Eberle Remodeling primarily tries to stay in contact with their past clients with a company E-newsletter and post cards featuring our award-winning projects. They also advertise monthly in local, magazines, as well as in geographic area specific newspapers where they typically work. They typically do one home show a year - sometimes more. They give wine to past clients at the end of each year. It's made by a company in Paso Robles, California, and it just happens to have the same name - Eberle.

What are the biggest challenges facing companies like yours in the building industry?

There are constant challenges in owning a remodeling business - whether it be health care, worker's compensation, or many of the other current economic conditions. Their goal is to be proactive, but at the same time keep it going with business as usual. They have tried & true systems that serve our clients very well. They won't cut corners, even in a very competitive market. When the owner's name is on the business - you really care about how people are treated. They constantly strive to do a better job, even though we have a long history & proven track record of providing high-quality remodeling experiences for our clients.

What are some challenges facing your business right now?

Keeping employees busy with a steady flow of work is probably the most difficult task that Eberle Remodeling (and most any remodeling company) is continually faced with. However, this can change rapidly and typically does.

How often do you work directly with an architect?

For several reasons, they don't work with architects. Their Design-Build process starts with the discussion of a budget - and not necessarily the client's stated budget, but a realistic target budget that is generally determined in advance where possible. Architects may not be well-versed in costs, and as a result, what's designed sometimes doesn't get built. Eberle Remodeling's number one interest is to have the smoothest remodel process that they can have. The more hands that are in the pie, the less opportunity there is to have a successful project. By guiding clients through the design, product selection, and construction phases of their project, they are in a much better position to create a happy, satisfied client.

What's next for your company

To continue to provide our valued clients - past, present & future - with the best remodeling experience & most value for their dollar for many years to come.

Is there anything else you'd like people to know about you and your company?

The company's success has been due in large to doing the details, communication, education, a lot of hard work, and integrity. In addition, having dedicated, hard-working, long-term, employees makes it much easier to maintain consistency and quality. Much of their success can be attributed to their talented & dedicated staff.

I approached this project with great trepidation because it is generally considered that a major remodel will bring stress beyond belief. After much hand-holding thru the design phase, I was amazed that, once the actual demolition and construction began, things went very smoothly! Outside of the minor inconvenience of living out of a microwave and refrigerator in my dining room, the entire process was headache-free. I give full credit to Eberle and his team for making it so easy for me!

Eberle Remodeling designed and remodeled my kitchen and laundry room. The finished product far surpassed what I had envisioned for it and I am pleased beyond words. The entire team was respectful of me and my home and was always very courteous. Not only would I recommend them to friends, but I will use them again when I am ready to remodel my bathroom!

Comment Budget Sacramento, CA May 01, 2012

Staying within my limited budget was very important to me and I was particularly impressed with Eberle's willingness to take the time to show me alternatives that would give me the kitchen I wanted without over-extending the costs. In several instances, he directed me towards products that I had not considered because I was concerned about the higher price-line. As it turned out, his recommendations for cabinetry and appliances were superior to those that I would have found at 'big box' stores and we were even able to contain the costs, thanks to discounts given by virtue of his referral. Nicely done!

Comment Expertise Sacramento, CA May 01, 2012

About GuildQuality and our Guildmembers

Homebuilders, remodelers, real estate developers and home services companies pay GuildQuality for customer surveying and performance reporting. We refer to these companies as GuildQuality Members, Guildmembers, or members.

Our service helps Guildmembers monitor customer satisfaction and -- if they choose to publish survey feedback on our public website at guildquality.com -- articulate the quality of their service for prospective customers.

All of the Guildmember information we publish at guildquality.com has been provided to us either by the member (such as pictures of work and biographical information) or by their customers via one of our surveys (customer comments, performance summaries, and reviews).

Surveys, Comments and Reviews

All of the customer feedback that we publish is derived from the customers we survey. Our Guildmembers provide us with their customers' contact information, we conduct the surveys, they receive the feedback, and -- if they have chosen to make their feedback public -- the member's performance report is automatically updated to reflect the response. Members may choose to publish a summary of either all of their feedback or their most recent twelve months of feedback.

In addition to average performance ratings and survey statistics, GuildQuality also publishes two types of customer commentary: Comments and Reviews.

A comment has been provided by a survey respondent in response to any one of the survey questions we ask, and a member may or may not choose to publish it. Often customers provide unsolicited testimonials or compliments, and members can choose to share these comments in their published performance report.

Many Guildmembers choose to participate in our formal review process. These members have added an additional question on their survey: "If you'd like to provide a public review of your experience working with the Guildmember, please share it here." In contrast to comments, which a member selects to have published, we publish all reviews, provided they are at least 30 words long. With each review, we include a one to five star rating provided by the survey respondent.

Important Information about choosing a Builder, Remodeler, or Contractor

We make no predictions, warranties or guarantees, expressed or implied, about the quality of any work a company on this website may provide. GuildQuality does not accept any liability whatsoever for any harm that might result from any statements presented on this website.

Prospective customers should weigh a multitude of factors when choosing the right building company, and never depend on a single source when making their decision to purchase a home or hire a contractor.
