The designer we worked with, Carol K, was an asset and made good suggestions that added value. She was detailed oriented, had a flair for design, and by following her suggestions, the end result was beautiful and better than I had initially pictured. All subs were very good. In particular, Tom Balliet was a wonderful leader to work with. He was prompt in replies, followed everything to resolution, and assured the project was done to specifications. There was no question that was too much for him to address. His mild mannered and reassuring approach was appreciated. Likewise, Matt, the day to day leader was an excellent craftsman as well as one to address our issues. We were fortunate to have both Tom and Matt lead our project.

I always have a great experience working with Penn. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend.

Communication was very poor. We repeatedly requested to be made aware of any delays in schedule and would go weeks without hearing from Penn Contractors. We never received a breakdown on the costs of the project, and never got one. Their control of and communication with subcontractors was poor.

Expertise - Unlike some other residential contractors, Penn Contractors has expertise that goes above and beyond residential projects. In particular, the lead supervisor, Shawn, had a wide range of expertise in commercial construction that he applied to our project. for example, the ceiling soffit was framed in metal studs which not only lightened the load on the existing joists but also created a very level, uniform soffit. Additionally Shawn had an expertise working with the commercial-grade lighting fixtures we selected.

Schedule - In general, yes, the agreed-upon schedule was adhered to. Penn Contractors worked diligently through some difficult supply chain issues.

I would recommend Penn to others, but I had to learn a hard lesson. The Scope Document is God. I should have allowed myself more time to go over the scope document with a fine tooth comb. Not being conversant with construction, I badly assumed what was normal, bu several times ran up against situations where I thought X would be done, only to find "No, X is not in the scope".
My recommendation, though positive, would come with this notice.

Problem Resolution - They addressed a huge problem, replacing a cracking main support with steel columns and a splice plate riveted between two I-beams where we thought only one existed. I was impressed! Staff always willing to work with me on ideas for solving unexpected problems.

Bruce really got the picture of what we wanted in our new kitchen, and we are totally enjoying our new space and all that we were able to incorporate into it: tons of counter space, tons of storage, extra sink in countertop, great new flooring, great lighting, skylights and windows and door. We are enjoying our new appliances and love the finishes we selected with Karen’s assistance. Also, we are happy we could keep one existing oven incorporated into island and our fridge as well. It was a project well done. It is definitely an “Oh, wow!”

We would definitely recommend Penn Contractors to a friend. They did a fantastic job on our bathroom remodel. They were professional, organized, and able to communicate very effectively with us.They stuck with their schedule and resolved any problems that came up along the way. The job site was always clean and safe when they left at the end of the day. Karen was very helpful with our product selections providing us with a list of places to choose from. Tom, the production manager was great to deal with, always on top of things and communicating with us throughout the entire project. Greg, the lead carpenter, did an outstanding job. Penn Contractors is a highly professional and reliable contractor. It is particularly capable in duplicating the quality of vintage existing homes that need updating and renovation. While perhaps more expensive than others, Penn's carpenters were experienced and skilled and it employed similarly skilled subcontractors to carry out what was a complicated renovation of our existing 1950's bathroom, master bedroom, and second floor stairway and landing. We were very pleased with the finished project and think of it as a significant improvement in the overall value of our home. Well worth the investment.
