Merrick did a great job on our kitchen & bath renovation. Right from the early design stages, David and Addie understood what we were trying to accomplish and proposed a design that matched our vision. They quickly responded to any issue that came up and kept us aware of options. MDBI staff were a pleasure to have in our home and they took great care in their work

This experience was both good and not so good (see note on item 3). Demo seemed to go smoothly. New work got underway in a timely fashion. Then issues arose. First was a short wall determined to be load-bearing. It seemed to take far too long to get the engineer in to work a remedy. Then with a wall fully open, my son discovered the plumbers had roughed in a vent stack which would vent into the hall...that was not acceptable and it took another delay to work out an alternate venting. Subsequently we found that the mirror for that bathroom, intended to be sunk into the wall, was not a type designed to be recessed. But even with an appropriate replacement, the vent pipe was still right in the way. Merrick did correct that one at no additional cost to me, other than the added time. Incorrect windows were ordered. Again, another delay in getting work completed. Toward the end, the subs seemed more interested in just getting done than in doing things right. Some of the last painting and trim out was sloppy; some of the bath/shower fixtures were incorrectly positioned. All, however, was corrected promptly. Handling the financial aspects couldn't have been better. The office worked with me since I preferred to have an active positive balance at all times. I believe that if I were going to do further work on this house, I would return to Merrick, but I would definitely target a few extra requirements in the contract.
Lead Source - Primarily via web. I spent a month researching private contractors, companies, etc. in the area and vetting them before selecting Merrick.
Our experience with Merrick Design and Build was excellent. We had made a selection of a previous contractor a few months prior and experienced some setbacks with the project. Ultimately, we determined to terminate the contractor and select another firm. After consultation with a number of design/build firms, we went with Merrick Design and Build. From the onset their level of professionalism and commitment to quality was outstanding. We are extremely pleased with all of the work that Merrick has done in our home and are excited to enjoy our remodeled house.
Areas Of Satisfaction - Overall, the finished product was a very high quality and professional grade. They were able to give us realistic expectations from the onset. We had a unique scenario. We had initially hired another contractor and that process did not go well, so we were switching contractors. I'm glad Merrick was willing to accept the job we had and it turned out to be a great selection for us. We felt very comfortable from day one. The lead carpenter was a great match for us.
Lead Source - We heard about Merrick through the Washingtonian. They list the top architecture and design build firms. They were on our short list. We interviewed an architect who looked at our project and basically independently gave us a recommendation for Merrick.
Additional Comments - Josh Truby was our led carpenter and he did a phenomenal job. Lindsey Kaiser, our designer, also did a phenomenal job.
I would give Merrick very high marks for workmanship, communication and follow-through. Their staff and subcontractors were highly professional and very skilled. Also, with respect to billing, Merrick was very transparent on costs, factoring in several change-orders and credits.
Additional Comments - I would highly recommend Merrick, based on our experience. Also, I would note that subsequent to the job, we have sought recommendations from Merrick for a few small projects around the house. In both instances, we have been highly impressed with the work of the contractors Merrick recommended.
I am very satisfied with the work that Merrick Design and Build did. They aren't the cheapest, but I think I got a fair value for my money.

Definitely. David Merrick is an honest and ethical contractor who looks after his clients. Whatever problems could arise (and with any major or even minor construction there is always something) he finds a viable solution. Merrick design build emphasizes quality over all other factors. We have had several large projects done in our 85 year old home over the years. This end result is by far the best.

We were very pleased with Merrick's craftsmanship and especially thrilled with Peggy Card's exceptional guidance and design. Merrick did everything they said they would do and any issues we had we were able to resolve them to our satisfaction. We had a very small kitchen and bathroom to remodel. They never treated us like a "small" job. In fact the workmanship was exceptional and had all the details you would find in a grand kitchen. In the end, our kitchen and bathroom remodel exceeded our expectations.
Merrick Design and Build, Inc. provides quality service and excellent workmanship. We strongly recommend this firm to anyone who desires a finished product beyond their expectations!

Additional Comments - We have a professional relationship with Merrick that has an empathy factor mixed with a family oriented feel. There is a blend of individualizing our needs and listening to our concerns there as well.
