Response
ALH Home Renovations   We invite readers to review all our Guild Survey responses to get a full picture of the quality service and exceptional product we deliver to our clients. It will also help put this particular review in context. Expectations were set from the beginning regarding our involved process for planning and preparation of projects (see our website). Design decisions and selections must be completed before any project can be scheduled and start. Mrs. Allcorn, due to her work schedule, had limited availability to meet with the interior designer through the spring to finalize design decisions. As noted in the client’s review, a number of items were added to the project which will extend the time it take to get the project ready to begin. These additions to the scope of work had to be priced and the changes approved before work could be scheduled. There was no delay in the project starting immediately…..AFTER the project design details and product selections were completed. The timeline of the process to complete the design applications and product selections in any personalized remodeling project is based on the client’s ability to make timely decisions and their availability to meet with the design team throughout the work week. Once all design decisions were made a pre-construction walk through was scheduled in June. ALH Home Renovations put together a production schedule even as the client continued to add and then delete items from the scope of work. In spite of the moving target ALH Home Renovations stayed on schedule throughout the project. This project included significant drywall repairs and refinishing ceilings smooth throughout the home. The contract with the client clearly states “NOTE: Contractor will do our best to keep dust particles from traveling to other parts of the home but cannot eliminate dust completely.” The client was not charged for additional drywall work completed that was not in the scope and the subcontractor returned to touch up all areas missed. The client got what they paid for and tile was cut with a wet saw minimizing dust. The contract included time for daily clean-up which ALH Home Renovations exceeded to accommodate the client’s schedule and plans with grandchildren. The client made several assumptions about project management and communication without seeking clarification. A detailed schedule was provided before work commenced and the client had total access to the project schedule, scope of work and financial aspects through a cutting edge web-based project management and communication program. Communication with the client was daily through job logs completed by the lead carpenter, emails by the operations manager and phone calls from the lead carpenter and the operations manager in addition to our construction management software. All emails and daily job logs are documented and saved to support our side of this unfortunate review. The lead carpenter kept the client informed about the progress, when he would be on site, and what to expect next. The client had unreasonable expectations (e.g. “on premises full time”) that were never brought to our attention. If they had been we would certainly have addressed them in a professional and courteous manner. In short the clients liked who we were and they liked our process until they realized that we would be remodeling their home (as the production schedule would show) during a time when they would have their grandchildren visiting. We gave them the option to wait until the grandchildren were gone before we would start, OR the option to start the project as scheduled and then make special accommodations with the remodeling project (at ALH expense) for their grandchildren’s visit (we pulled of the project for a week). The clients chose to have us start as scheduled. BUT, once this conflict was realized by the client…..we could do nothing right in their eyes. Mr. Allcorn would regularly compliment our lead carpenter for the skilled work he was performing, then turn in a review like this. A review that affords the client the option to criticize ALH as a company, but could still not rob our lead carpenter of his skilled work or tarnish his character or integrity. Later our lead carpenter confronted the Allcorn about their harsh assessment of his work and was given an apology. We wish the client the best. ALH would chose to not work with these clients again.
