Our family's dream was to convert a barn/garage into an in-law apartment so that multiple generations could reside comfortably on the same property. Doug and his team were with us every step of the way, from initial concept through detailed design and build-out. The Two Storey Building team (and their subcontractors) spent *a lot* of time on our property, and everyone was always super helpful and careful. They kept us informed about the schedule and let us know about any changes or adjustments. When we had to make key decisions, Doug and his team made sure we had plenty of options and they talked us through the pros and cons. Overall, it was a great experience and we are totally thrilled with the finished project.
They were very responsive to our needs for a very extensive remodel. They were always on time and did excellent work.
Two Storey Building was a great fit for us in a number of ways: they are an environmentally focused/green company, they were willing to put up with changes in plans to exapnd or contract the project as needed, they were willing to use recycled or re-used materials when we could get them - and in one case, helped us get them! (2200 SF of re-purposed barnboard), and they enjoyed working on our small, quirky yet complex project! This was the first time we have hired a general contractor, and they were well worth the extra money, identifying and coordinating extremely skilled crews from framing and roofing to electricians and plumbing and painting; procuring necessary permits; even finding a well contractor to dig a new well with good water. Crews were uniformly courteous and considerate of our very close (14 feet away!) 92 year old neighbor.
During COVID, many construction projects are delayed months for lack of people and mateial resources, and Doug of TSB used his expertise and connections to minimize delays greatly. Mat, his lead carpenter, was patient and skillful, and had great design ideas but also worked our design concepts into the final picture.
I would more accurately give them a 4.5 rating: we had some communication issues, some of which were our fault for not understanding all the details and ramifications, some of which were the responsibility of TSB - but to their credit, they accepted responsibility and apologized, and were eager to improve communication as we moved forward. No company is perfect, but I would definitely use TSB again if needed. They are good people, want the customer to be highly pleased with the final product and highly skilled at what they do.
A professional team with attention to details, quality workmanship, and transparency. Good recommendations along the way if asked.
We had the pleasure of working with TSB on a whole home renovation this past year. The team listened to our requests, developed creative solutions and we are now in our ‘brand new’ forever home. We did the work in two phases back to back and there was no delay - the entire project was completed in about 8 months and we could not be happier. The team was responsive and transparent and we look forward to working with them in the future on other projects! Highly recommend.
We hired Two Storey Building as our general contractor. They subbed-out 90% of the work, but that was the understanding from the beginning, not a surprise. They chose good companies that they were familiar with and had worked with before. The work would have been finished ahead of schedule, but the weather didn't cooperate, July was the rainiest on record. Even with the weather things went very well, finished just a week or so late, (again, due to the weather, not because of any issues with Two Storey or the crews) and we are happy with the outcome.
The whole TSB team are true professionals and a pleasure to work with. Highly recommend!
I would not hesitate to recommend Two Storey Building. The entire process went so smoothly, and the end result was exactly what we dreamt of. We could not be happier!
Outstanding team, trusted them in my home. I was difficult to work with- they did a great job.
We had a fantastic experience with Two Storey Building. Doug and his crew and subs did a great job.
Problem Resolution - Listened to our input
Schedule - Ended up being ahead of schedule!
Recognized Excellence - Mat and Sam were exceptional
Areas Of Satisfaction - Skilled carpentry, good suggestions, great team of workers, planned around us - so it was less disruptive. We love the new kitchen!
Recognized Excellence - The entire team is super!
Areas Of Satisfaction - Their process and work product are super.
Recognized Excellence - Everyone at Two Storey Building provided exceptional service.
Areas Of Satisfaction - Communication, professionalism, workmanship.
Communication - Good communication throughout process. Promptly responded to emails, calls, texts. Provided weekly updates and cost breakdowns against estimates as work progressed.
Quality Of Materials - Two Storey was good at laying out material choices and helping us find the best balance of cost, durability, function and aesthetic.
Professional & Organized - Two Storey was on top schedule and kept us informed when things were happening. Provided explanations to our many construction questions. Sub contractors were all professional, courteous and answered questions.
Schedule - Good management of subcontractors, started on time and generally finished when expected with few minor delays here and there. Our project was estimated at about 6 months but took about 10+ months. Larger delays were primarily due tasks managed by homeowner (writing this review), including geothermal/hvac and buried electrical installation with different contractors. Two Storey supported those activities where necessary (ended up tackling the buried electrical) as well as doing a basement reno outside of original 6 month scope...a ‘while you’re in there’ add-on requested by homeowner. Next time I’d have Two Storey manage all of it.
Value - We really wanted to do it right the first time and have a comfortable, durable, energy efficient home. We selected Two Storey based on positive reviews, similar renovations and green building expertise- and they delivered. They did a good job of staying on top of costs and budget, although we added on quite a bit of extras (~20%). Building and renovating in the Boston area is not cheap, any way you slice it. Forget HGTV. We intend to enjoy the house for many years, and therefore tried to balance high quality construction choices (where sensible) with some consideration for near term house market values. Overall we feel like we got good value for the money, and the house is awesome.
Recognized Excellence - Doug, Bill and Mat were great. Dave Welch at Norfolk Kitchen has the patience of a saint and provided great direction on kitchen design. Steve Baczek, architect provided good feedback on energy efficiency choices for a tighter budget.
Additional Comments - Would recommend and use again.
Extremely happy with our remodeled sunroom
Areas Of Satisfaction - Quality of work, expertise of employees and subcontractors, friendliness of personnel, working flexibly with us to achieve our goals and caring that our project turned out as we wanted it to.
Additional Comments - Overall an excellent choice for major renovation.
Two Storey worked with me to develop a plan for an addition and a major kitchen renovation, kept all the pieces moving forward at the right times so there were no lags between one sub finishing and the next beginning, and the staff were all very good to work with.
Areas Of Satisfaction - My kitchen went from small and serviceable to giant and awesome. My wife got her dream of an island, expecting to be maybe 2 feet by 4 feet to something like 3 feet by 11 feet. The fact that I still have space to fill in my cabinets is a wonderful feeling.
We were very pleased with the work Two Storey Building did on our house. They listened to our ideas and made them work out beautifully. Communication was excellent, workers were always professional and thoughtful
Areas Of Satisfaction - We were very comfortable that Doug was familiar with the permitting and variance processes. We did not have to navigate them alone.
Two Storey Building just completed a whole house renovation and an addition of a new Master Suite all while we lived in the house. The project was completed within the budgets set and on the timelines we discussed. Their employees and sub contractors were all great to work with. The job site was cleaned up every night and they made a real effort to keep the areas we were still occupying as clean as possible. The quality of the work was fantastic, they delivered everything we asked for and as we expected!
Areas Of Satisfaction - I was most satisfied with their responsiveness and professionalism. They always said that anything I wanted to be done was no problem, they will take care of it and if they couldn't they explained why not. They were coopertive in reaching out to me and getting me responses.
We've worked with Two Storey Building on three major projects (a new home, a basement finishing, and a bathroom renovation project) ... and we'd hire them again in a heartbeat.
They came with strong neighborhood recommendation, and met all our expectations. We would gladly use them for additional project(s) as they come up. We are extremely happy with our new kitchen and shower.
Additional Comments - They were great and I would definitely use them again.
Two Storey Building is an above average company that is easy to work with and delivers a high quality result. No project is stress free, especially when you are living at the job site during an addition. But TSB communicates well and resolves issues together with the customer, so it's an above average experience.
Areas Of Satisfaction - I think that the end product speaks for itself. I'm sure that we were challenging customers with high expectations, but TSB aimed to make up happy, and that went a long way.
Lead Source - I found them via their website, which was well done -- explaining their company, their values, and sufficient gallery examples to make an impression.
Additional Comments - Thank you, Doug, Mat and Chris. We are really enjoying our new garage, music room and patio areas.
Since I was involved from start to finish, you should have included my name - Cindy Brooks - in the above request.
Two Storey Building was fantastic. They took a drab, crumbly basement and turned it into a gorgeous, bright, sparkling, airy space that we now use every day. The ceiling, the walls, the floors, rebuilding the stairs, putting in a bathroom - there was a lot of work here and every bit of it looks top-notch now. When I asked questions, both Doug (one of the owners) and Jerry (the foreman on our job) responded promptly and clearly. I felt I always knew what was happening and had a clear view of the schedule. They are not the least expensive, but the quality of work is so great that I feel it was worth every last cent.
It was very easy working with Two Storey and the results were great! We definitely would recommend them.
Areas For Improvement - They exceeded our expectations at every turn, even when there were issues with the project, they were responsive and worked hard to remedy the problems.
Two Storey Building added a new Timberteck deck with LED lights on the stairs to our pool with stairs down to both sides of the yard. In addition they completely gutted and redid our sunroom with new ceiling, walls, insulation and flooring, removing and replacing where the former door was with a window and adding a new sliding to where 3 sunroom windows were. Included was removal of some insulation in the area beneath the sunroom and adding new all insulation and ceiling the ceiling in the area below. Doug was always in touch, worked with subcontractors on portions of the work and Jerry did very professional work. We did not like the building inspector ADA required wood railings so they were replaced with TimberTeck for no maintenance and the required young child gates at the bottom we were able to get slits added that fit in with the code requirements which enable seeing the stair LED's from a distance in the yard. Great work. Thanks again. We will be in touch for the next project.
The managers and staff were very friendly, knowledgeable, courteous, and accommodating. The co-managers, Doug and Bill, met our expectations for meetings and allowing us to be fully involved in the process. The use of meeting notes, action items, and detailed schedules (MS Project) was very effective to keeping the overall effort on schedule. They work with high-quality subcontractors that we were able to interact with to ensure our requests were met. We had an open book pricing arrangement that was helpful to allow us to fully weigh decisions. In the end, they delivered a high quality product, on-time, and we are very satisfied.
Areas Of Satisfaction - I was satisfied with the overall quality. They did an outstanding job.
Lead Source - I've known Doug for years. I had also heard good reviews about Two Storey from other people in town, and had no qualms with hiring them.
We had obtained quotes from 4 other contractors. Doug was the most receptive, responsible and patient contractor with a price that made sense. We liked him and gave us a good vibe. Before we started the project we we amazed and how confident he was in giving us a timetable (microsoft project) with estimated dates from completion on different parts of the project. He followed them to the letter. Many of our friend were pessimistic and told us that no contractor will folow dates that it may take more than a year to complete. Doug, Bill and his crew completed the job in 4 1/2 months. We could not believe even with a 1 week delay from the city inspection!! The finishes are great and the quality of materials top notch. Working with Doug we came to realize that our architectural/engineering firm had made a mistake on the type of beams to use. Doug used his engineer and corrected the problem at no extra charge. This kind of projects are very detailed ones. I would recommend you estimate an extra 10% from the quote since from the allowances my wife and I changed many things which made us expend and extra 40K but not Dougs fault.Doug and Bill (his brother) are very receptive and always listening and never dismissed. He also set up multiple meetings to update us in the progression of the project and make sure we understood what the next step was and when we needed to decide on specific things like light fixtures, wall paint, floor finishes. When the work was done his crew came different times at no charge for minor adjustments.A few pieces of advice1. Have a architectural plan approved by your city and fire department 2. Make your addition as big as you are allowed and affordability3. You can not live in the house while it is happening so you need to pay for rent, but the bank will not charge you mortgage during the construction4. Find a reliable bank, Doug got very annoyed when the bank intentionally delayed payment due to laziness form their end.5. Have extra cash that you are willing to spend for the change orders6. I would recommend Doug a million times, he is a good and fair contractor.
Professional & Organized - Not only are the principals at Two Storey Building professional to deal with, all their staff and subcontractors were, too. At every site visit we were greeted cordially, all questions were answered, the site was kept clean and free of debris.
Schedule - The schedule was adhered to literally to the date - very impressive.
Construction Quality - Exceeded expectations with regards to quality of work and materials.
Clean & Safe - Very impressive. Neighbors who lived nearby through the construction commented on the professionalism of the crew - both with respect to cleanliness and with respect to noise.
Areas Of Satisfaction - - Timeliness- Quality of work- Ability to maximize my budget- Ability to think of details we may not have known about.- Willingness to be flexible, especially in light of bank delays - thank you.
Additional Comments - Thank you, Doug, Bill, and team for our beautiful home. We love it and hope to enjoy it for many years to come.
We interviewed several contractors and chose Two Storey Building for our basement project because we were impressed with their process and organization, and felt we would get a high quality product. Doug believes in taking the time upfront to develop and figure out the design, well before any work begins. Given our project oriented thinking process, this worked well with us, for we knew exactly what we were getting before any wall was hung or nail was hammered. The final costs were based on our specifications and were in line with the 1st pass of the project estimate. When issues came up, we were able to discuss our options and figure out the optimal solution. We must say that Doug and Bill really wanted us to be happy and were willing to do the right thing, which was not always the easiest. When we tell people we “finished our basement”, the words do not accurately describe the project. We actually put an addition on to our home and provided a high-end extension to our wonderful living space. Doug and Bill took our ideas along with their expertise and made our dream a reality

We contacted Two Storey Building on August 17th, seeking full contractor services for renovations to a 6500-sqft home including 4000 sqft of new hardwood flooring, full kitchen renovations, detailed master bath tiling, various wall additions and relocations with associated electrical and plumbing, full interior and exterior painting, and extensive exterior brick masonry and architectural details. We wanted to begin work three weeks later and be finished by the holidays. Two Storey responded at once, discussed the sub-tasks and material options with us by email over the next few days, arranged a meeting at the property a week later with all required subcontractors present, prepared a cost estimate within another week which we approved, and started demo work the morning after we closed on the house. For the next three months they worked closely with us on every aspect of the ongoing work--materials selection, design options, construction details, and scheduling. Two Storey provided first-rate craftsmanship, direct access to both the owner and foreman, excellent coordination of construction sub-tasks, rapid response to our questions, execution of change orders at reasonable pricing and with minimal impact to schedule, excellent raw material and construction waste management, adaptability of activities around our availability for review or consultation, and open presentation of all costs. (They even assisted with power to the house during hurricane Sandy). The final project tasks were re-sequenced to accommodate our move-in in early December and wrapped up a week later, allowing us to be fully settled in by Christmas. Including our changes, we finished within 10% of the initial cost estimate. All in all we were quite pleased with the experience and the outcome, and with no hesitation would recommend Two Storey Building to others considering home construction or renovations.
TSB employees and contractors were efficient, friendly and courteous. TSB provided effective communication on the tradeoffs between cost and quality. TSB expended special effort to complete the project in time for a social event we hosted at the house even though that wasn't part of the contracted time line. We would certainly use their services and recommend them to friends.

They are a little expensive when compared to other contractors, but they do as they promise, they deliver great work and paying a little extra for that is worth it. No hassles and if any problems afterwards they stand by their work/product. I will always recommend them when asked, will tell them they are maybe a little more exp. but they take care of it and you have no hassles (money well spend). Besides that the people they employ are professionals, very nice nice to work with, they show flexiibility throughout the job (within reason) and our next job (garage) we will definitely invite them again. Nothing but praise.
Areas Of Satisfaction - Our home had a number of issues that were only discovered after construction began. Two Storey Building made us aware as they came up and were very open to talking about them and exploring options to resolve them. Excellent communication, flexibility, and creative problem-solving, as well as high-quality workmanship.
We were very pleased with the planning process, and our salesperson was very open. We did a build-by-design so we said how much we could spend and they came up with a reasonable plan that fit our budget. The timeline was wonderful and he really stuck to what he said, in fact taking a little less time than predicted--he said it would take about three months and that's what it was.The quality was excellent, and the workers were very professional and open and really kept us in the loop about changes and what the cost differences would be for different options. Overall it's excellent quality and a great product.
Areas Of Satisfaction - The timing was great. They really stuck to their timeline and kept us really informed. It was done in a very timely manner.
In order to appreciate this review, I must state that I am highly critical in general, so Two-Storey Building really made a positive impression on me. They were incredibly easy to work with. I was most impressed with how responsive and flexible they were to late changes and requests that I made, without adding unnecessary costs. They were continually concerned with making me happy and satisfied with their work. Impressive!!
Areas Of Satisfaction - I was most satisfied with their business and their ability to look at what people are trying to do and make it happen. It was excellent. Two Storey had no problem working with our architect. They had great intuition and high quality business. Bill and Doug are both excellent. We had four different firms look at our job and Doug Storey stands out like someone who knows how this business is suppose to work. Renovating old homes in Massachusetts is a difficult business; they are really good at what they do.
Areas Of Satisfaction - I'm most satisfied with their communication and thoughtfulness.
Areas Of Satisfaction - On our existing project they used an existing structure and they put a new roof on it, a new roof line and it was such a collaborative effort to make a structure out of something that we already had. It was very nice.
Additional Comments - I think they are great and I wish everyone in town could do a project with them.
Areas For Improvement - They did not fall short of anything!
Areas Of Satisfaction - Their professionalism and workmanship were excellent.
Lead Source - A referral from another contractor. If I need any more work I know they do excellent work.
Areas Of Satisfaction - The service and end result have both met expectations.
Areas Of Satisfaction - They did a nice job in terms of communicating and keeping things on schedule. Once we got into various segments, they did a nice job on that as well.
Areas Of Satisfaction - I was most satisfied with the overall picture.
Areas Of Satisfaction - If such a thing exists as the dream job, Two Storey went far beyond my expectations and I was and am completely satisfied, and delighted at what they accomplished and how they did it.
Additional Comments - Always on time, competent, cooperative, friendly and supportive! They deliver a superior product, nowadays associated with the past when craftsmen cared about quality! I'd recommend them again and again. They are the best!
Areas Of Satisfaction - Very organized, very professional, very honest.
Areas For Improvement - None; they exceeded my expectations.
Areas Of Satisfaction - Their communication and willingness to find alternatives and make sure custom items matched expectations.
