We loved his teacher this time! She was great at keeping the kids engaged and helping my son feel safe to try new things.
Have had a different instructor every class. No continuity.
Sense of community . Love the family atmosphere !
I’ve held back from communicating my experience in fear that a swim teacher would treat my child poorly due to my response but, they have already treated them
My kids did not have a consistent teacher and I felt the teachers were more more into their routine of teaching than seeing each individual student.
Dan is such a wonderful instructor that loves his craft. He explains things in a way that helps he relax being a 46 year old. I learned to float on my first lesson due to his calmness. I would definitely recommend lessons at the Briggs Y
The class does not teach anything related to getting child used to water. No tips have been given to help child used to getting water on head or face or anything else. Class will sing 1 or 2 songs then just have playtime.
The sessions seem a little chaotic and after 3 years of swim lessons my child still doesn’t know how to swim.
Teachers we're encouraging and patient.
More rigorous than the previous program we were enrolled in. Our kid is making real progress.
I have found that swim lessons vary significantly based on the instructor. My daughter's most recent instructor is a younger man who has been wonderful! He gives specific feedback in order to help students improve their form. Many instructors seem to go through the motions without seeming to care if students make progress.
Me gustan las instalaciones, sobre todo la piscina.
Friendly staff, good selection of classes, recovery center.
the staff is friendly and the facility is clean
I appreciate that the caregivers pick up my child when they are upset. They are also kind and patient.
I like the equipment available and the layout and cleanliness of the facilities.
What's not to love! Fun, fitness, friends!!
I’d probably recommend to others with young children. However, my kids are 8 and 10 and when they go in the mornings there are only very little children and the older kid area with age appropriate activities is closed, so they have nothing enjoyable to do.
I’ve only taken my child to the kids zone a couple of times within those times I had 2 kids be mean to mine on two separate occasions. Although I know this can happen in a multiple kid environment however there was only 2 staff members to about 20+ kids in one room. There wasn’t enough space for all the kids or enough staff to keep an eye on the kids. Neither time did a staff member pay attention to the incidents. The second time a staff member picked up the kid who tried to bite my kid and tried to take the toy from my kid. Staff removed the kid from the situation however mine was crying and there was no attention given. I ended up getting my own kid to comfort. I’ve also noticed the floors being very dirty, a bandaid on the floor without being picked up, inappropriate sized toys in the baby area such as a small ball could have been choked on. I removed it and handed it to staff they seemed unbothered. There’s not really a secure why of containing kids yes there’s baby gates that older kids can open and let babies out. There needs to be age appropriate areas separated and more staff, not inexperienced kids watching kids.
It's hard to park.
Classes are fun! Friendly staff. Great atmosphere. Massage table is a nice finish to a workout
It would be helpful to extend the child area hours to include Sunday and an extra hour in the evenings on weekdays.
Suggestion box: announce 15 minutes prior to closing. When it said kids zone open on the pool schedule it doesn't say that it closes at the same time as the pool. That doesn't allow for getting rinsed and dressed without opening the door to find multiple staff waiting in the hallway with your child. That was embarrassing not only for me but my 13 year old daughter. It's the first time he hasn't wanted to go swimming with the bigger kids because he wanted to stay and play with friends. We didn't know they closed at the same time as we haven't used our membership often. I felt incredibly disappointed. The schedules weren't posted. I had to ask for a copy.
its easy and convienent for our family needs
Often the tube playing area is closed. Or they remove the children and close it while they’re playing. Also, my 6 month old child cries when I’m gone and they call me immediately and have me com get him. I can’t work out.
The front desk staff are welcoming. It feels laid back, but still clean and taken care of - that can be a hard balance to achieve sometimes.
The showers are barely functional, especially for a tall person. The les mills gear is really old.
I’ve been participating in a small group class with Janice Rosen as our trainer, and it’s been an amazing experience. Her humor and enthusiasm keep me motivated, and her depth of knowledge keeps us all safe as we learn how to use the TRX equipment.
Childcare hours were no clearly explained when I signed up. I was not told they have extended lunch times in the middle of the day when I actually intended to bring my two 2yr olds. This is important to tell a mom who spends a lot of time getting them in and out of the car while hoping they dont try and run off in the parking lot just to find its closed and having to get them back inside the car upset they cant go play. I'd rather just go to a park at that point.
Staff are great and I love having so many activities to choose from.
Plum Street staff are friendly and helpful, the facility has everything I need and I always feel comfortable there.
I know my child is safe and having fun while I get get a good work out in
The instructor never taught hip hop or any other form of dance. The music was not hip hop. This was not even a class, student attendance declined over the month. We will be looking for an actual dance studio for our needs.
nice chill gym
Get more weight lifting machines in the weight room. You only have 1 leg press, a leg extension machine, a leg curl machine, a couple of back machines, and 2 multi-station pulley-cable machines that are always being used. That's ok, but that's not really enough for a great workout, especially when it gets crowded in there.
I would like to see a Smith Squat Rack. Women do bar squats too, and those old-school squat racks you currently have in there are not being used, and are difficult for women to operate. You need another Leg Press machine in there. A 45* leg press where the foot plate is up in the air @ 45* would be great. They are usually plate-loaded. You also need a seated cable row, a seated chest press, an incline press, and a seated pec flye machine that doubles as a rear-flye. (Usually referred to as a "Pec-Deck".
You have lots of room in there for more equipment. Right now it looks too empty and not well-equipped.
Thanks for asking.
I love taking my son to the daycare. It is one of the few places in Olympia/Tumwater that has a daycare in the gym. All the workers there are also so kind! There are a few things I would suggest for improvement: I wish the under 2 year old area open more. I also think the tall play ground area should be restricted. My son went up there and was stuck since it is too old for him which could be dangerous. I also think the play area needs more sanitation since my son got sick the first few days going there. Overall though I really appreciate the program!
The equipment is dated so I find myself going to the Briggs location which is out of the way.
Closing the Jacuzzi because seniors were walking along the sides of the pool looking at the children during their swimming lessons could have been avoided altogether by use of signage. Instead, seniors have to feel like we're all seen as pedophiles.
Friendly, fun, helpful and clean. The perfect place for kids, families and seniors. No better place to be!
YMCA personnel are all very friendly and helpful.
Add the back and ab machines. Add a pool.
We are looking for a weight and cardio room environment that appeals to all members, including aging adults like ourselves. We applaud the Y’s commitment to having a welcoming environment for all - including LBGTQ+ and people of color. That said, a phrase such as “people of all ages” is suspiciously missing from the mission statement, and the general and CEO marketing.
An improvement we suggest is having the music at a low or average, not a loud, level. A raucous “young bro” vibe predominates in the weight room in the later afternoons (2-4:30 PM), fed by music turned to a very high volume. Many of us choose to listen to our own music, news broadcasts and books on our own headphones. I use my AirPods while working out. Most days after 2 PM, I have to turn the volume up to nearly the highest level to outcompete the Y music volume in the weight room. This can damage the eardrum.
I applaud the sandwich board sign urging members to not sit on the machines as a lounging space. That seems to have worked for that problem, for now. Why not circulate the posting periodically?
I suggest again (3rd time) that you post an additional sign, in the cardio room only, reminding members that cell phone conversations are not permitted in the workout spaces or locker rooms. The rules list clearly asks members to “take cell phone conversations into the hallway”, yet the problem persists. The reason you do not hear from more members about this is perhaps because they do not want to stop their workout and walk to the front desk, or be seen as a complainer to young staff who are clearly trying their best. I report this about every third time it happens.
The youth classes have not been great for my kids. The 4 week time frame isn't enough I think the classes should be 8 to 12 weeks per session.
My daughter just turned 4 and is still working on potty training. I dropped her off wearing a diaper so I assumed they would not let her in the restroom. When I picked her up they said that she went in the restroom and she put her head in the toilet and was left in the restroom unsupervised. Really disappointed and thinking about canceling my membership all together.
I asked someone at the desk to show me how to work a treadmill, and I was brushed off. He said he didn’t know how and didn’t know who did, but maybe make an appointment with a trainer. Really???
I have never found a gym that I felt comfortable and safe in. As a trans person seeing body inclusivity in the group classes is really important to me. So far instructors/staff have all been fun, supportive, and body positive. I feel like the Y is really trying to make education accessible and offer support in a wide range of goals.
Clean facility, friendly staff, equipment rarely full
There were 2 childcare workers and my son was the only child. Neither worker showed enthusiasm when we walked in. They both seemed miserable or upset. I understand bad days happen but when you’re working with children there needs to be lightness and positivity. My son seemed fine when I picked him up but I was disappointed in how “down” the childcare employees seemed this day.
Great customer service, friendly staff, clean facility, lots of classes
Machines are always broken. Buy new and stop trying fix the old ones.
