Areas Of Satisfaction - Merrick Design & Build exceeded my expectations with their craftsmanship, daily cleanup, overall quality of the work, and professionalism of the work teams.

Merrick Home Services was dealing with some personnel issues when doing our job. That bled over to our project management in an unprofessional way. Merrick Home Services ended up firing our project manager. The main worker was struggling with basic tasks and would get frustrated, use language, and hit things. Merrick Home Services came back and addressed the issues. It has been 8 months, and we have already noticed poor workmanship. I did reach out to their VP, too, and received poor customer service all around.

I would approach Merrick again and first.

The quality of the work they performed was great. From repairing holes in dry wall ( and matching the existing paint perfectly) and replacing sheets of drywall, to installing new lights, sealing an exterior door, moving an exterior shut off valve, repairing a porch roof and screening the porch, and more. We couldn't be happier. We felt the pricing was very reasonable and will likely call on Merrick for additional work. Rusty was very responsive, followed up on any concerns quickly, never made us feel any job was too small and really worked to address all our needs. We will definitely recommend their services and in fact already have.

Unfortunately, we are actively discouraging friends to use Merrick. Our entire experience was negative and quite painful. The only thing that saved the final project from looking absolutely terrible was the technical expertise by a home owner who formally worked as an architect, having the ability to step in and course correct. On multiple occasions during both the design and construction process, we had to tell Merrick we were not being listened to, and that our feedback was not being incorporated. Part of the design was changed without our consent, seemingly because the financial manager decided it would be too expensive to insure the construction, despite the fact that the design was agreed upon and signed off by both parties. Other times, we felt like the firm was trying to justify poor construction and poor materials as “normal" and then trying to gaslight us when we requested a fix. What’s not normal is being so kept out of the loop by poor communication that we had to tell the firm twice to cease and desist on the construction, until we know what’s happening. What’s not normal is having to explain to them that their installation looks like it was done with used materials, and that it made us embarrassed to show our house to friends and family. To top it all off, we learned from a new next door neighbor that they sued Merrick for poor construction in his previous condo, confirming that our case was not isolated. For all these reasons, we will not be recommending Merrick and will actively discourage anyone from utilizing them.

Merrick is a small, family owned firm that acts with integrity. The design component was very well done and the permitting knowledge was solid. However, this job had challenges related to the pandemic which affected labor and supply availability, but also issues beyond that that Merrick needed to address and resolve earlier. There were numerous challenges related to proper site supervision and the difficulty once a project manager left and the existing staff did not seem to have the resources to keep the job moving forward. The punch list and the completion of the job were significantly delayed. The budget was adhered to, with any changes discussed and explained. Overall quality of product was quite good, but process and site supervision need improvement.

Merrick has helped us tackle a variety of challenging home projects, big and small, including diagnosing and repairing a serious structural issue with our foundation and underpinning one corner of our house. Their knowledge and expertise far exceed the other design build companies we consulted with, and their pricing was also more competitive. We plan to use Merrick in the future and highly recommend them to others for larger remodels, structural issues, or small home improvement projects.

Merrick did my kitchen more than 10 years ago. It was very well designed, lots of light , good cupboard and counter space.
They recently did a beautiful job removing old paint and staining my deck.

Merrick Design and Build has been our exclusive contractor for 25+ years. I wouldn’t trust anyone else to be able to complete the work on time and within budget.

Merrick did a great job on our kitchen & bath renovation. Right from the early design stages, David and Addie understood what we were trying to accomplish and proposed a design that matched our vision. They quickly responded to any issue that came up and kept us aware of options. MDBI staff were a pleasure to have in our home and they took great care in their work

This experience was both good and not so good (see note on item 3). Demo seemed to go smoothly. New work got underway in a timely fashion. Then issues arose. First was a short wall determined to be load-bearing. It seemed to take far too long to get the engineer in to work a remedy. Then with a wall fully open, my son discovered the plumbers had roughed in a vent stack which would vent into the hall...that was not acceptable and it took another delay to work out an alternate venting. Subsequently we found that the mirror for that bathroom, intended to be sunk into the wall, was not a type designed to be recessed. But even with an appropriate replacement, the vent pipe was still right in the way. Merrick did correct that one at no additional cost to me, other than the added time. Incorrect windows were ordered. Again, another delay in getting work completed. Toward the end, the subs seemed more interested in just getting done than in doing things right. Some of the last painting and trim out was sloppy; some of the bath/shower fixtures were incorrectly positioned. All, however, was corrected promptly. Handling the financial aspects couldn't have been better. The office worked with me since I preferred to have an active positive balance at all times. I believe that if I were going to do further work on this house, I would return to Merrick, but I would definitely target a few extra requirements in the contract.

Our experience with Merrick Design and Build was excellent. We had made a selection of a previous contractor a few months prior and experienced some setbacks with the project. Ultimately, we determined to terminate the contractor and select another firm. After consultation with a number of design/build firms, we went with Merrick Design and Build. From the onset their level of professionalism and commitment to quality was outstanding. We are extremely pleased with all of the work that Merrick has done in our home and are excited to enjoy our remodeled house.

We had initially hired another contractor and that process did not go well, so we were switching contractors. I'm glad Merrick was willing to accept the job we had and it turned out to be a great selection for us. We felt very comfortable from day one. The lead carpenter was a great match for us.

Lead Source - We heard about Merrick through the Washingtonian. They list the top architecture and design build firms. They were on our short list. We interviewed an architect who looked at our project and basically independently gave us a recommendation for Merrick.

Additional Comments - Josh Truby was our led carpenter and he did a phenomenal job. Lindsey Kaiser, our designer, also did a phenomenal job.

I would give Merrick very high marks for workmanship, communication and follow-through. Their staff and subcontractors were highly professional and very skilled. Also, with respect to billing, Merrick was very transparent on costs, factoring in several change-orders and credits.

Also, I would note that subsequent to the job, we have sought recommendations from Merrick for a few small projects around the house. In both instances, we have been highly impressed with the work of the contractors Merrick recommended.

Definitely. David Merrick is an honest and ethical contractor who looks after his clients. Whatever problems could arise (and with any major or even minor construction there is always something) he finds a viable solution. Merrick design build emphasizes quality over all other factors. We have had several large projects done in our 85 year old home over the years. This end result is by far the best.

We were very pleased with Merrick's craftsmanship and especially thrilled with Peggy Card's exceptional guidance and design. Merrick did everything they said they would do and any issues we had we were able to resolve them to our satisfaction. We had a very small kitchen and bathroom to remodel. They never treated us like a "small" job. In fact the workmanship was exceptional and had all the details you would find in a grand kitchen. In the end, our kitchen and bathroom remodel exceeded our expectations.
