They listened to what we wanted and made our desires their priority. Brett and crew were very responsive to our questions with quick response times and thorough answers. When we needed design ideas to solve space, materials and lighting issues, they came up with workable solutions that suited our taste. Most of all they respected our views and concerns without patronizing us.
We are very happy with the work completed by Landis Architects/Builders. I would not hesitate to refer this company to others or use their services for a future project.
Additional Comments - Landis essentially rebuilt our house. They are a bit pricey, but bring the knowledge, experience, and quality work. We had an excellent experience with the construction team headed by Luis Orellana. Allowing for setbacks due to the pandemic, they completed the project in a timely fashion- with great communication and a professional atmosphere. Known for their reputation of doing great work, Landis certainly lived up to the hype.
We picked Landis for our project as they had been used by 3 different family members ranging from a major addition to a large Bethesda home incorporating 2 plots into one (including hardscape and a swimming pool), to a basement and sunroom remodelling of a DC split level, to the drawing up of builder-ready plans of 2 levels of a 100+ year old rowhouse in DC. We needed an aging-in-place renovation of a split level as well as a basement remodel. What stands out are (1) the architectural design which was extremely creative given the limitations of a split level, and (2) the professionalism of the Landis staff - architects and builders alike. Our project was done during COVID with all its limitations. However, the project though slowed by COVID, met all its deadlines. A major remodel to our home 30 years ago was not with a design-build firm. With Landis we could see the difference. Landis handled all communications with the architects and the various building staff and we were kept up to date via Builder Trend on a daily basis. When we had questions, Landis was quick to respond. When we brought up changes, Landis gave us priced out options. When there were delays due to COVID-related shipments, Landis informed us immediately. Landis does quality work. We are back in our home and enjoying the changes immensely.
Our project was completed on time and on budget with high quality
We used Landis for a major renovation to our 1930s Tudor home in DC. They were phenomenal from beginning to end. They helped us to update our entire home while keeping its original charm. Their staff are extremely professional and lovely to work with. Even the subcontractors were great. I would highly recommend!
Would be happy to recommend them.
It's a little too early in the process to have any strong feelings about this. I don't feel comfortable giving feedback on a lot of these metrics yet.
Very professional, timely, great workman and staff.
I will recommend Landis Construction to friends. we were not in the house while work was done but Landis people took pictures and sent them as progress occurred. work was done on time and as predicted. End punchiest was resolved and three things missed in the final walkway were handled quickly and well, two of them without cost.
Additional Comments - Landis Architects are excellent. They are very much about their customer service and have done a great job.
The quality of the work is excellent. The price of the work is very high.
Landis was thoughtful and collaborative throughout our project!
I cannot strongly agree with this until after we complete construction. Based on the design phase, I believe Landis has very strong attributes in terms of organizational capabilities and David Richardson has been excellent. However, the communication issues with Brett Schoolnick, the timeline to incorporate changes/comments into plans, and the budget misses throughout the process would make me hesitant to rate this category as a 4 at this point.
Tahani could not be nicer, really, both in terms of her design and customer care. Ethan looking after our project comforted us, as he is an owner. We did not face any situation that we would need to reach out Ethan to solve any issues. Tahani, Dale, a project manager, and Martin, a lead carpenter, were so very responsive.
Areas Of Satisfaction - They are first and foremost very professional. They try to keep the schedule and budget. They think for us, instead of just getting a job done quick. Stated differently, we trust them, which probably the most important element of picking a general contractor.
Schedule - Dale was very clear about the scheduling of the project. The team finished the project within the agreed upon timeframe, which was really nice - I had been mentally building in delays into the schedule and was pleasantly surprised. When the timeline needed to be adjusted because of an incorrect cabinet, Dale was direct and upfront about the issue and made sure that we had the highest quality work done.
Excellent experience from start to finish. I feel our renovation could not have gone smoother. My interactions with Tahani Share (architect) and Luis Orellana (head carpenter) were especially outstanding in terms of being responsive to changes, respecting and understanding what we our goals were for individual parts of the renovation and to adapting to whatever issues arose.
Additional Comments - I had a really great experience.
Very professional and collaborative throughout the entire project. Excellent communication.
Landis completed a complicated project on time and on budget with great communication and updates throughout. They're trustworthy and reliable in a way that's not always easy to find.
We are very happy with the work and the outcome. It’s hard to believe we did an addition as everything blends in so well.
Overall, we have been very happy with the work completed by Landis Architects/Builders. We brought them a very large project and have been very impressed with how timely the work was completed! When they gave us a timeline for when we might expect the work to be finished, they really meant it! Not to mention, everything turned out absolutely beautifully! Plus, the process, although quite cumbersome and very time intensive, was actually relatively fun and made enjoyable and easy to manage by the staff assigned to assist throughout the process. We will certainly be using Landis again and already have begun future project plans to do so :)
We did a major design/build project with Landis on a historic home where we gutted and updated the existing interior and then added a large addition. They were simply amazing to work with. Super organized, trustworthy, on-time, high quality and the finished product is perfection. Many of our neighbors complimented us on such acourteous and efficient team during the renovation process -- when do you hear of that?? There were often up to 20 tradespeople working at the same time to get a long job done in exactly the time they said it would. Highly recommend Landis for large and complex projects.
Very well prepared for designing, getting the permits and executing construction on Capitol Hill.
Definitely would, and have recommended, but most neighbors and friends we have talked to are looking at a lower price point. We have pointed out that our bath project also included new hot water system, underpinning, and electrical heavy up -- people still think it is on high end of range. We are very pleased though!
Areas Of Satisfaction - Ability to get a quick start, quality of work, communication from start, expertise of Ethan Landis in quickly assessing best options for desired goals.
Additional Comments - Thanks to Ethan, Henry, Israel and Jon for their work - both the bath and fireplace have significantly improved our home. We would definitely contact Landis if we have any future interior construction needs!
Areas Of Satisfaction - Dale is a star and should be highly rewarded. I also appreciated everyone's responsiveness to my questions, incl. Dale, David and Tahani.
Landis Architects/Builders is a first rate, first quality, customer oriented business. During the design process they listen and they (Chris and Jon) pretty much got everything right in their first design presentation. And unlike some designers I have dealt with, they didn't just listen politely to our comments but actively researched our ideas and discovered design elements that met our wants. I was really impressed with how they worked with Ethan to bring everything within our budget such as our desired bathroom sink and other bathroom fixtures. It was a pleasure to see our foreman Steve every morning. He took time to let me know what was to be accomplished during the day and was extremely able in leading his crew. His craftsmanship and problem solving is top notch. I wish I could remember the plumber's name, as well as the electrician, but they were all highly personable and competent. I've had maids that did not clean up as well as they did every evening.Without reservation I have to give Landis the highest recommendation. It was a job well done.
I had an outstanding experience with Landis. The quality of the build was top notch. They were responsive during the design process and were able to translate our ideas and wants into a cohesive and beautiful renovation. More importantly, throughout the process, Landis maintained excellent communication, adhered to deadlines, and treated our home with respect. I would give Landis 10 stars if I could, and I would not hesitate to use them again.
Areas Of Satisfaction - Communication: the process is overwhelming. We had a lot of questions, a lot of changes, and it required a lot of interaction to create our design plan. The entire team at Landis was responsive and helpful throughout the entire process, which lasted almost a year. It is quite obvious that the entire team at Landis has made a commitment to customer service and they will truly do everything within their power to ensure their clients are happy with the finished product.
Areas Of Satisfaction - We loved working with Allen. He was incredibly patient and we trusted him fully. The quality of work seems excellent (Martin's attention to detail is terrific). We also appreciate efforts to help us cut down costs.
I had an excellent experience with Landis Architects on my recent kitchen remodel and bathroom remodel. Both projects were well-designed and turned out beautifully. Landis assisted with the interior design and materials selection and took a lot of pressure off of me to make a million decisions. They were open and receptive at all points during the design and build phases.
Areas Of Satisfaction - Chris Landis is a thoughtful and patient architect. He went through 7 draft designs with us for our kitchen renovation before we found a design that worked and had that 'Aha' moment.
I can’t say enough about the superb services provided by Landis on the extensive kitchen/powder room/bathroom renovation they did for me (across 2 stories and involving the removal of an interior staircase). Literally every person on the job team - from design, to project manager to on-site construction team - was experienced, diligent and incredibly reliable. We didn’t encounter any major problems during construction, but there were lots of little adjustments that needed to be made to address unexpected situations encountered (106 year-old row house). When these arose, Landis gave me all possible options, pros and cons of each, and full cost implications, so making a decision was essentially stress-free for me. Everyone I worked with at Landis was great – not only professional, extremely knowledgeable about their specific area of expertise (design, project management, actual construction), but just really nice people as well. They genuinely seem to care about every job - large or small - and do whatever they can to achieve their clients' objectives. Landis isn't the cheapest option on the market, but neither are they the most expensive (by a long shot). I took 6 months to select a contractor and chose Landis because I was convinced they could provide both the best value for money as well as a stress-free, ‘no surprises’ experience. As my project draws to a close, I can confirm that this is exactly what I got. I would recommend them enthusiastically and without reservation.
Salesperson Accessibility - I can't say enough about how great Matt (and Tahani!) have been throughout the design - and into construction - process. They have never failed to be able to answer my many questions, have given sound advice and guidance at every decision point, and been 100% mindful of my cost constraints.
Expertise - Literally every person on the job team - from the project manager to the person helping with procurement to the actual builders on site were experienced, diligent and incredibly thorough.
Communication - The Buildertrend system is great - I travel a lot internationally but was still able to see progress on a daily basis, even when I was out of the country. The staff member on site was very diligent about uploading picture daily.
Problem Resolution - There weren't any major problems but lots of little adjustments that needed to be made to address unexpected situations encountered. Landis gave me all possible options, pros and cons of each, and full cost implications, so making a call was essentially stress-free for me.
Clean & Safe - Everything was swept and tidied DAILY. A number of friends came by during demolition, re-framing and rebuilding to check on the progress and all expressed amazement at how clean and relatively dust free both the construction site and rest of the house were.d
Value - Landis certainly isn't the cheapest option on the market, but neither are they the most expensive (by a long shot). I took 6 months to select a contractor and chose Landis as the one that offered best value for money. As my project draws to a close, I am more convinced than ever that I got great value for money.
Landis Architects/Builders delivers a quality project in a very timely and efficient manner. They are easy to work with.
Areas Of Satisfaction - Impressed with their timeframe and that they did it ahead of the timeline. They were communitive with the timeframe and stages of the project timeline.
When we needed to have our vintage concrete windowsills replaced (along with all our windows), we contacted two smaller contractors, but they were not able to take this on. One of them recommended Landis, and we were delighted to learn that they would be able to create replicas of the windowsills. We had a variety of other home improvement needs, and Landis carried everything out with wonderful attention to detail and fine workmanship. All the people who worked for them were very fine. The project manager came by frequently and was always available to see that everything was proceeding well. We highly recommend Landis!
Areas Of Satisfaction - Overall quality of the work, extremely high professional standards and skill level of almost all staff working on the project, and design ideas from Ethan Landis.
Areas Of Satisfaction - Excellent workmanship; terrific, hard-working, reliable, courteous employees; good design ideas,
This is a high-quality top tier company. At no point did we encounter even a hint of unprofessionalism. Everyone we interacted with was highly skilled and a pleasure to work with. Even our neighbors commented on how great the workmen were (we actually miss those guys!). The design process was particularly good. The design team spent significant effort in trying to understand our vision for the job and the types of design we liked and was focused on translating that vision into the job - and they had an organized and efficient process for doing so. When issues came up, they responded effectively and with integrity to find a resolution that we were happy with. The completed job is in fact what we envisioned and, with one exception around a tile selection (that's too complicated to discuss here) and perhaps some unnecessary complications around the floor finish, there are no significant areas where the design or construction turned out to be flawed or have problems. There were a few things we were less happy with. We found Landis to be materially more expensive than other options. We were willing to pay a premium to achieve a smoother construction process and avoid some of the risks and hassles that are so common in the construction industry. And we got some of that value in their integrity and professionalism. But we still had to deal with some typical construction issues that we thought we were paying to avoid - subcontractors failing to show up; subcontractors using toxic chemicals in clear violation of the contract, resulting in my having to take time off work to deal with the issues; delays and errors around cabinet delivery; tile that was installed using clearly different dye lots and that had to be replaced. They require the owner to handle painting which added stress and effort on our part, particularly because they missed the schedule which forced us to have to manage the painters' schedules and get them to mobilize 3 or 4 times. And there were a few elements like a creatively-designed storage space under the stairs that we really wanted that they seemed reluctant to really engage on. Our sense was that custom carpentry was outside their wheelhouse, or they knew it was too expensive, or they just didn't want to do it. That was important to us and the fact that it never made it into the job is a major disappointment for us. We wish the job had been either less expensive, or that they had exercised better attention to detail, better communication within their team, and were more proactive in planning for some surprises that we'd expect an experienced company to have seen coming. But the job was done very well, and on balance, looking at what was accomplished, the problems we avoided and the wonderful end result, we're very happy with our decision to use Landis.
They exceeded all of my expectations. They are an excellent company.
Areas Of Satisfaction - I was most satisfied that they were on time and under budget. Their communication was extremely good, especially considering it was a long distance project.
Additional Comments - It was a historic property and they were able to get everything approved through the architecture society with no problems.
Very creative and attentive.
Areas Of Satisfaction - My husband and I are not big visionaries. It was helpful that all members of the team were able to walk us through options on the front end of the project and throughout. We aren't needy and demanding, however sometimes it can be difficult to work with people who don't have an opinion about something. They helped us formulate an opinion and that eliminated any buyer's remorse or project delays.
Areas Of Satisfaction - Most satisfied with the their quality and responsiveness. They are very solution oriented.
Landis has done a wonderful job with out renovation and the entire team has been a pleasure to work with.
Very professional and excellent quality. Good communication, and I like the fact that much of the work is done by in-house people and not subcontracted out. They also did not nickel and dime over small changes.
Additional Comments - Chris and Tahani have done a great job, have been very responsive, and have given us much-needed guidance and ideas.
Areas Of Satisfaction - Great people, outstanding quality of construction, excellent designers (structural, space, kitchen and bath, finishes, and details), great carpentry work, excellent subcontractors (tile, flooring, painting, roofing, stone masonry, etc), outstanding project management, outstanding problem-solving
Additional Comments - We highly recommend Landis -- they are a pleasure to work with, and their work is top-quality! Not inexpensive, but you get what you pay for!
Landis did an excellent job, and exceeded our expectations. We were looking for a firm to manage the entire remodeling process, and this is what they do. They have an entire staff of architects, designers, project managers, and the major trades like electrical, plumbing, and carpentry. Each employee we interacted with was polite, courteous, and respectful of our home and ideas. Landis brought our ideas to life, offering us perspective that we had not thought of. They are a proven firm with a great track record of projects. Highly Recommended.
I loved working with Tahani and the design was great.
Additional Comments - We've found Landis to be a very professional, customer focused organization. So far, staff have been very responsive to our needs and the process as a result, had been stress- free. We highly recommend their services.
Areas Of Satisfaction - Ken Guillette and Andrew Kerr were fantastic at managing the project. Craftsmanship among workers was excellent. Good recommendations on outside contractors like painting and closet install.
