It's hard for me to give a super useful review for the company to use objectively. I purchased this deck for my parents and had to observe remotely as best possible. That said, I only experienced absolute professionalism from the individuals I interacted with, and I would highly recommend them to anyone with means to purchase a quality product. Crippen was absolutely wonderful to my elderly parents and that includes the employees onsite. My entire family was impressed with the craftsmanship of the personnel onsite, and the pace at which they achieved amazing results.

We hired Crippen Woodworks to do a full deck rebuild, and we are overall very happy with our experience. Charlie was easy to work with, he was readily available to discuss the planning and implementation of the project, and his staff and crew were professional and courteous. There were a few minor issues that came up (as with any home project), but Charlie and his staff quickly responded to our questions and resolved any problems. They dealt with all of the permitting and inspections and were knowledgeable about what would pass v. not in our county. The project was completed in a timely manner, and the final deck looks great! Definitely recommend and would use again.

We spent a lot of time discussing the design and materials for replacing the old deck which was attached to the ledger board on a three foot overhanging sun room. They recommended using New Castle 14 gauge steel beams as joists running through the overhang mounted on the 2x6 wall behind the brick wall which was ingenious to bring it under new deck building code and also providing additional support to the sunroom overhang. The joists have triple cross bracing. The other two competing bids would not do this; rather, they proposed installing steel posts three feet away from the wall mounted on the concrete patio 14 feet below and using Fortress beams for the joists not attached to the house. Crippen built the opposite supports on 6 inch steel posts with steel cross bracing mounted on concrete pillars poured in the ground. All steel is powder coated and guaranteed for 50 years. Thie decking is composite, and the deck is designed to support 200 pounds per square foot. The Dunwoody City inspector told me on final inspection he was very impressed with the design and construction quality.

They even coordinated the under deck system to ensure a smooth installation with the new deck. Every question I asked was answered thoughtfully and I was never made to feel guilty about asking. The quality of workmanship is the best I have experienced since moving to Atlanta more than 32 years ago and I am extremely happy with the final product. I loved Douglas’ answer when I ask him why he like to work with Charlie, he said: “He always buys the highest quality products and has everything onsite and ready to go at the start of the project, so everything goes smoothly”. Talking to Charlie Crippen about a new deck was refreshing. Not your typical salesman. You don't get a low base price, then have to add on all the pieces you want. Charlie tells you what the total price will be and what it includes so there are no surprises at the end. We were comfortable doing business with him. The crew came out every day ready to work and, except for a lunch break, worked steadily until quitting time (or, for us, until the rain came almost every afternoon!). The whole process was pretty painless and the results are solid and beautiful.

Areas Of Satisfaction - Crippen Woodworks exceeded expectations when they built in some review days during the project. I had a couple of different ideas along the way. They really worked on them creatively. Some materials were not accessible; they even used a 3D printer. They made it happen. They allowed for changes. For example, I wanted the rail to accommodate string lights. They had to come up with extra-tall posts for this. They were able to customize and meet my request. They served the customer and the budget. The posts were double the height and worked with the rail system. It looks like it came straight out of the factory.

Additional Comments - I have done a lot of projects, and Crippen Woodworks is my most favorite contractor. The ownership they took in the project was excellent. They understood my capabilities and made excellent suggestions. I was blown away by the finished project. My deck is probably now my most-used room in the house. We spend a lot of time there.

Value - We got the top quality deck that we paid for and more. Our project involved tearing down the old deck, building the new one with a slightly different footprint, adding a large covered area with a metal roof off of our kitchen, and screening in part of the deck on the ground floor. We also had ceilings installed upstairs and down plus we replaced the flooring on the side deck that connects the front to the back deck.

My wife and I interviewed several highly-qualified deck contractors – and unquestionably chose the best in Charlie and Crippen Woodworks. Our reasons were as follows:
1. Background in fine interior carpentry. We knew we were getting a skilled contractor.
2. Large enough to have a sophisticated operation / multiple crews, but small enough to ensure the attention of the owner
3. During the initial interview, Charlie highlighted a water/soil-grading issue that every other contractor missed. Small details matter!
4. Entire staff were employees, not independent subs – and all were long-time employees. Strong internal culture of quality. Again, small details matter.
5. Crew were professional, polite, and extremely hard-working. Staff cleaned up work area at the close of every day. Everybody was accountable.
6. Competitive and fair pricing.
7. Charlie was always accessible and on job site frequently. Charlie is also well connected – we had to replace a retaining wall that was failing – Charlie pulled strings to have this fixed quickly and kept project on track.
8. Everyone, from Charlie on down, were good people…in a way, family oriented & super friendly.
9. Finished product is A++ (see pictures – we couldn’t be more thrilled) and we have full confidence he will always be around if we ever have any minor service issues.
We recommend Charlie and Crippen Woodworks without reservation.
