Melvin T. Morgan Roofing had previously done a repair job for me, and I was satisfied then. With this roof replacement most recently in June, I was highly satisfied with the work performed and the manner in which they went about their cleanup. I'd highly recommend them to someone looking to have a roof done.
After receiving five roofing estimates, we chose Melvin T. Morgan Roofing not because they were the cheapest—but because they convinced us they cared about quality workmanship, communication, and customer service. We were told they used their own trained crews rather than subcontractors, and before the contract was signed everyone was professional, responsive, and genuinely seemed to care about doing the job right. I was happy to pay more for the assurance our property would be cared for and that we were promised a good experience.
Unfortunately, our experience changed dramatically once the work began.
The biggest issue wasn’t the roof itself—it was the complete breakdown in communication and project management. Throughout the project we found ourselves trying to coordinate between the estimator, Mel, Alex, the office manager, and eventually another foreman. Different people gave different answers, promises made during the estimate were later denied, and no one seemed to be consistently managing the project from beginning to end. It became exhausting trying to figure out who was actually in charge.
The installation crew spoke no English, making it impossible to communicate while they were working on our home. During the project, ladders damaged multiple shutters, our Ring doorbell was damaged, our expensive bird feeder system was taken down without anyone asking us and left lying in the yard, our dog fence was taken apart without permission and reassembled incorrectly, and debris was left around our yard and on our window ledges after the job was supposedly complete. Our property simply wasn’t treated with the level of care we expected or that was promised by Mel, the owner.
One of the biggest disappointments involved a piece of rake metal that had blown off during a previous storm. We discussed replacing it several times during the estimating process and understood it would be included with the roof replacement. After the roof was completed, we were told it had never been included and would cost extra. After multiple conversations, the company eventually agreed to do it as a “courtesy.” Experiences like this happened repeatedly and left us feeling that verbal commitments made before the contract disappeared afterward.
What disappointed me most wasn’t that problems occurred—construction projects can have issues. It was how those problems were handled.
The kindness and professionalism we experienced before signing the contract seemed to disappear once concerns were raised. Instead of empathy and ownership, many of our concerns were met with defensiveness, conflicting information, or explanations about why the company wasn’t responsible. Several legitimate concerns were even referred to as “additional requests,” even though they involved damage that occurred during the project or items we had been told would be included. By the end, the company we were dealing with felt completely different from the company that earned our business.
To be fair, Alex consistently communicated professionally, respectfully, and kindly throughout the process. Mel also personally reinstalled my four gutter cameras, which I appreciated. Those efforts deserve recognition.
I genuinely wanted to leave a five-star review and support a local family business. Instead, what should have been an exciting investment in our home became weeks of confusion, repeated follow-up, conflicting information, damaged property, and unnecessary stress.
If you’re considering Melvin T. Morgan Roofing, my advice is simple: get every promise in writing, document your property with photos before work begins, and make sure you know exactly who will be responsible for managing your project from start to finish. We paid a premium expecting premium service, workmanship, communication, and respect for our property. Sadly, that was not our experience.
We got a quote from 3 contractors. Melvin was the best price with better warrenty did work timely and efficient
New shingles look amazing.
The crew was very professional and the foreman introduced himself and let us know they was going to start on removing the old shingles.
Melvin Morgan did a good job on my roof and gutters, although the work was completed only about two weeks ago. Therefore, I have no longitudinal data in terms of time, as to how the work will hold up. My main issue was they did some damage to my yard with the heavy load they left with. They did attempt to clean it up and it was wet, but in my opinion a much better job could have been performed such as bringing in some additional soil and grass and grading where the damage occurred.
