Even if your carpet looks clean, it probably isn’t. Carpeting that hasn’t been professionally cleaned is full of bacteria, allergens, and all kinds of germs. Those substances go straight from your carpet into the air you breathe. It’s extremely unhealthy. Ideally, you should have your carpet cleaned at least once a year.
