We had a great experience with Wausau Homes. We were impressed with the options available to us, and the ability to customize every aspect of the home. The timeline, from start to finish, was a huge factor in deciding to go with a Wausau build.
We tell everyone we talk to about building a new home about Wausau Homes. Our team has been so thorough making sure every detail was discussed, even ones we didn't think of
I would not recommend using Wausau Homes – New Richmond. There were many issues we had along the way, but below are a few of the things I felt most important to share so you can make a better-informed decision when deciding whether to use Wausau Homes – New Richmond.
As a general contractor, Skylar rarely found time to come through behind his sub-contractors to inspect their work. There were times where weeks went by without him showing up on site. Most of the time I had to point things out to Skylar that were not done as planned or left incomplete.
Be prepared to protect your building materials. When the cabinets, doors, and trim were delivered, they were all left in our garage. Now that wouldn’t be a problem if the garage floor was poured and garage door was installed, but they weren’t. When the snow melted in the spring and we received rain, the garage started to flood. Instead of Skylar moving or protecting the materials, my dad and myself built a dam to prevent further flooding and carried most of the cabinets and trim inside to our basement. Had we not done so, most certainly probably half of the materials in the garage would have been ruined.
Honesty is another issue. Skylar lied to me about the stairs delivered being wrong and said he had to take it up with Wausau corporate. He said he contacted Wausau corporate to let them know the stairs had an issue. After a long delay in getting an answer about what was wrong with the stairs, I called Wausau corporate directly and they didn’t show any record of Skylar contacting them to report an issue with the manufacturing of the stairs. Turns out the stairs were just fine, and Skylar just didn’t know how to install them.
To give you a little timeline. Building Agreement was signed 6/1/21. Ground was broken 9/3/21. Building Agreement indicates builder will complete within 150 working days of commencement (ground breaking). 150 working days is about 7 months if you figure 20 working days a month. That equates to an agreed upon date of sometime in March 2022 to complete. We moved into an unfinished home 6/4/22. After waiting 3 more months for these punch list items still not be fully completed, we decided to cut our ties to Wausau Home – New Richmond and closed on 9/12/22. My wife and I decided it would be better to finish the remaining items ourselves.
If you are expecting a builder to complete things on time and communicate well, look elsewhere. Things started off great with good communication but once the build started my phone calls, texts, and emails would go unanswered for some time.
I would recommend the home, but I would not recommend Cold Spring. We had great difficulty with the builder. The home is fine, but not the builder.
I am very happy with the building.
Differentiating Factors - Wausau Homes Medford were on top of everything. People were courteous and clean. It was very professionally done. I was very happy with everything.
Areas of Improvement - Wausau Homes Medford did a very good job. They were great. This is the best experience I have had. This is my second home.
Additional Comments - Carry and Jason were just wonderful throughout the entire experience. Carry on the design and Jason on the building were super to work with. Questions were addressed right away. It was a great experience.
We're are extremely happy with the home that Wausau Homes of West Bend. This is second Wausau Home that we have built. The quality of the craftsmanship and the materials that were used met or exceeded our expectations. Even though we built during Covid, there is room for improvement in the areas of communication and time management.
This is a difficult survey since the project was built during Covid. There are several areas where I am disappointed in the build but I also understand that covid made the build difficult at times.
This was such an enjoyable process!
Schedule - We actually moved in earlier than the date promised.
Differentiating Factors - Paul & Wendy Communicated everything clearly, really professional at their explanations.
As much of a headache it was to build a house Wausau homes built us a beautiful, sound, comfortable home. It's exactly what we envisioned.
The Wausau package itself we believe was quality. Unfortunately, our individual representatives from Wausau Homes of Traverse City did not demonstrate the same quality
Jeremy & Jason (J&J) run a tight ship. Very good communication and response. Very timely and on schedule in spite of supply line issues. Well done. Good workmanship, great follow up. Very expensive, but we built in 2021. Joe Biden is president so EVERYTHING is expensive & over priced. So, not WHM fault. Very professional and very pleased overall. Good company.

We can't say enough about working with Nate and his team. Everyone we came across, spoke with, interacted with were all very professional and very good at their job. Going with Wausau guarantees you a very high quality home and if we had to do it all over again we definitely would.
If we had it to do all over again, we would choose Wausau Homes Kenosha.
All steps were explained at the beginning. We were kept up to date the entire process. Dustin handled all the details and organized the contractors.
Crew Professionalism - Very hard workers and polite
Contact - The house could be up in about a week. Plus the construction was impressive watching the u tube videos.
Very professional. Great communication. Cost came in higher than expected mostly due to JB and his administration.
Our house still isn't complete, no communications from Wendy as to when anything will happen.
Damaged cabinets for second time.
They were supposed to provide quote to build our deck this spring, no word from them.
I had to go find another builder.
Anytime prior or during the build I had to inquire and suggest things to Wendy and then something would happen.
I even had to call Paul to help get things moving on many occasions.
I never received a copy of what the costs were to monitor, this is a major flaw.
Our pricing kept going up from the onset due to the non urgency.
Absolutely! We have already recommended them to two separate sets of friends.
Matt and Nick are very easy to work with and we would recommend them to others looking to build. This was our first building experience and they provided just the right amount of support to us.
Builder Satisfaction - Nick and Matt are some of the nicest people we know. They are accommodating, responsive and patient. They came with good suggestions, advice and recommendations for us to consider throughout the process and that was very helpful to us.
We really enjoyed the planning process and the set day.
I have already recommended Wausau. The planning and design of our house is everything we wanted.
Mike Brighumm worked diligently to meet our budget and design for our retirement home in Boulder Jct. WI. We couldn't be happier.
Final Design - Mike Brighumm listen to my design elements I wanted to incorporate. He offered his own ideas/suggestions together with Marisa to the table which we incorporated. Our home exceeds our expectations. Superior craftsmanship together with good communication between the trades and the Wausau Homes team. We will definitely recommend The Wausau Homes to friends. They build a solid home that we know will weather the northern woods elements.
Builder Professionalism - Very much so!!!! We could contact our builder anytime. Mike shared his direct cell phone number. Since we were working long distance, our means of communication was by phone, emails and texting. Both Mike and Marisa along with the office team and suppliers work very efficiently and effectively to keep all informed on the same page.
Crew Professionalism - Very much so!!! The Wausau construction team were very hospitable and professional. The team on "set" day worked amazedly efficient who had the entire home stick built by the end of the day as promised by Mike Brighumm. All the individual trades during the construction were friendly and professional with great workmanship skills. Our home displays beautiful decorative elements thanks to the excellent craftsmanships from the trades hired by Wausau Homes.
Satisfaction - Mike Brighumm kept using the term "tight house" as we worked together on the planning stages of our home. He was right! Our home is rock solid - with warm windows, doors and a dry crawl space or as Mike calls it - "mini basement". The decorative elements exhibits superb craftsmanship throughout our home. We couldn't be happier.
I couldn't be happier with my new home. It was built by Gagne Homes and I love it so much. I love my home and I am super happy.
Quote Match - I did end up having to change a few things, but they were consistent with what they charged me.
Differentiating Factors - The builder paid attention to detail and were exceptional at the quality of work they do. They took extreme pride and ownership in their work.
Working with Jed at Wausau Homes was great. Easy to communicate with and always very personable. My wife and I were 4 hours away from the build site and Jed made it feel like we were on site almost every day.
Quote Match - Even with the build being in the middle of Covid-19, things remained at quoted prices.
Builder Professionalism - Jed met my expectations and beyond.
Contact - I knew the reputation of Wausau Homes and i really like how the building process worked. Knowing that the house was not going to be built in the outside elements is a huge plus.
Differentiating Factors - The biggest thing that sets Wausau Homes apart form other builders is the build process. Having the house built offsite and then being delivered and set on site is the best quality. Not having the build exposed to the weather week after week is very assuring.
Additional Comments - If we would ever build another house, Wausau Homes would get the first call. If we built in Mercer again, Jed is on the top of the list.
