CC describes itself as a 'full-service' contractor and that is indeed the case. From initial design concepts, permitting, demolition, build, and final punch list they keep the project moving forward until completion. George, the founding owner, oversaw our basement renovation nearly 20 years ago. Based on that experience, we didn't hesitate to contact CC when we decided to do a complete gut of our existing kitchen and downstairs bathroom. Since the scope of the changes involved a considerable disruption to our normal routine, we were concerned about how expeditiously any unforeseen issues would be addressed and how the rigorously the safety and cleanliness of the work area would be maintained. Mike, George's son, supervised the project and uses the latest web-based project management tools to allow us to collaborate on every aspect of the project on a day-to-day basis.

In short, the project was finished on time and we kept our sanity through the whole process. The entire CC staff and even the sub-contractors were pleasant to deal with, but particular mention goes to CC's designer, Grace Arndt, and to lead carpenter Kory Remick. Their expertise and diligence were instrumental in achieving our goals.

We've completed two projects with Custom Craft: a kitchen renovation in 2015 and a laundry renovation in 2024. Overall, we are pleased with the design, and both the kitchen and laundry represent significant improvements over their previous states. We have enthusiastically recommended Custom Craft to our friends, and they did an exceptional job with renovating their kitchen. However, in our latest renovation of the laundry room, some minor details could have been handled with greater care. We found ourselves having to perform touch-up work, such as filling nail holes and repainting. Additionally, certain larger holes were left unfilled, and despite Custom Craft's attempts to balance the washing machine (with cardboard shims), it remained off-balance, resulting in damage to a nearby wall.

Due to our constrained budget, we opted for a vinyl tile floor. Unfortunately, it wasn't made clear during the selection process that this floor would simply rest atop the concrete, essentially creating a "floating floor." After living with it for a few weeks, we've noticed that it creaks underfoot and doesn't seem particularly durable. In hindsight, we regret not stopping the project to opt for solid tile flooring, had we known about this detail beforehand.

Venting the dryer posed significant issues. Pushing the dryer back resulted in a dented duct, causing condensation when the dryer operated. Custom Craft's repair fell short, and communication regarding the fix was lacking. During the final walk-through, we highlighted the issue, prompting a solution involving widening the vent hole and covering the drywall with a panel. We were told the patch would be of the drywall and not a panel covering the hole.

Reflecting on the project, we wish these issues had been resolved before the final walk-through. However, we've found ourselves managing them independently. We still need to address a large hole in the molding, find rugs to dampen the noise of the creaky tile floor, and properly fix the dryer vent patch. The exterior dryer vent will also need to be replaced since it is not properly attached and the color does not match the siding. I know projects have deadlines and costs associated with fixes—I wish I could say they went above-and-beyond to make the corrections look amazing but only the minimal was done. Despite these challenges, we appreciate Custom Craft's prompt response to our concerns and their overall collaboration throughout the project. While they are a great group of people, we hope that their follow-through on fixes will match the high level of craftsmanship we expect from them in the future.

Communication - They were extremely responsive and we always knew what was going on. I appreciated Mike checking in with me and confirming things such as placement of cabinet hardware. Julie was also very helpful late on a Friday afternoon after the first coat of paint was completed in our kitchen and we did not like the color. She came out Monday morning and we were able to quickly pivot to a new color that we really like and feel is great in our home.

We met with numerous design/build firms, received bids from three, and Custom Craft was the only firm who's bid was inside our budget range. The communication between Mike, Brittany, Matt, etc. and us was excellent and we always knew the status of each step of the project and all of our questions were answered in a timely manner. Considering the size and cost of the job, this was about as painless as it could have possibly been.
