We hired Seattle Skylights / Roof Boss / Metropolitan Construction because they were listed as Velux Certified Skylight Specialists. For structural skylight cut-ins, we expected specialists who understood permits, engineering, and code compliance.
This was our worst contractor experience. A job represented as 10 to 12 working days dragged from August 2025 to April 2026. It only reached completion after months of us catching problems, demanding permits and engineering documentation, stopping premature drywall scheduling, disputing improper charges, and chasing close-out documents.
They performed structural work before we were provided permits or engineer-stamped documentation. Their contract said the work would be done to code. Cutting manufactured trusses for skylights requires engineering, permits, and inspection. When we raised the lack of permits over the phone, we were told we had not specifically asked for permits, and that the salesperson should not have included “to code” language in the contract. That was shocking from a company selling itself as a skylight specialist.
After the original install, we inspected the attic ourselves and found cut truss members that appeared to be hanging or not properly attached, no visible hangers, large gaps, odd scrap-like framing, and no clear reinforcement. We had to demand permit paperwork, an inspection path, and engineer documentation that should have existed before work began.
The insulation was wrong initially. The contract referenced R-40 insulation, but they first installed rough R-13 insulation that looked temporary and poorly fitted. We only got that corrected after pushing back.
Even after engineer-stamped details were produced, their crew came back and still did not follow them. We found wrong hardware, missing vertical members, inconsistent fastening, hardware attached on only one face in some locations, and fasteners that did not match the engineered requirements. We warned months earlier that the screws were wrong and would not pass inspection. They denied there was a problem, then later had to send an installer back after inspection required correction.
They tried to schedule drywall before structural and permit issues were resolved. We had to stop that from happening. They framed the permit delay as “King County takes time,” but the inspector told us this timeline was not normal and only took this long because the contractor had not followed code and had to get the permit after the fact.
Communication was terrible. Once issues started, the owner became verbally aggressive with my spouse on the phone, so we required communication in writing. Even then, they often did not respond until we escalated. Later he told us that if we had timeline concerns, we should “contact the county and threaten them.”
The office and field crews seemed disconnected. Installers did not understand the insulation requirements, structural work did not match the engineer’s details, and later the drywall crew showed up without understanding the full scope.
Jobsite management was awful. After one installer was injured, they left Ram Board with blood on it inside our home and did not notify us. We asked them to clean it up and they refused, so we removed it ourselves because we have pets. Later, their crew was visibly annoyed. They also tried to rely on thin painter’s tarp where we had asked for proper floor protection.
They left a Honey Bucket in our yard for months and appeared to forget about it until we reminded them near final payment. Their final invoice included charges for things they did not do, including interior scaffolding even though no scaffolding was used.
Even after closing out the balance, they never responded to requests for the lien waiver/release discussed at the beginning and referenced in the contract.
Completion does not redeem the experience. I would never hire this company again or recommend them for skylight cut-ins. A certified skylight specialist should not require months of homeowner pressure to complete a code-compliant job.
Staff is very helpful and professional
Worked hard in extreme heat for Duvall 80-90 degrees
Very helpful and professional all answers are from Charlene Mitchell( wife) as well as Bobby Mitchell
.
I was very pleased with the work. Roofers were polite and helpful
Highly professional from start to finish. An experienced crew installed skylights and replaced roof beautifully, and in short order. Everything was cleaned up each night. Upon completion, the crew made sure my property and that of the neighbors' was left spotless. The roofing team and office team were courteous and quick to respond.
Great job
Best combination of price and service. Listened to what I was asking for and delivered.
Best Experience for a large project.
Metropolitan Roofing was truly professional from estimate to final payment. We are so grateful to have found them.
Metropolitan Roofing was great from the first step to the final step.
After an exhaustive vetting of roofing companies and products I finally picked Metropolitan Roofing.First let me make one thing clear. Each member of the six-member crew was a hard-working individual! All were friendly and professional. There was NOT a slacker in the bunch!Monday, 6/26/2023. The six-member crew arrives as planned at 7:30. They wait for a dump truck and supplies to arrive but there was a misunderstanding at their office. The crew leaves by 8:30 after completing zero work. At this point I'm wondering: Did I hire the wrong company?Tuesday, 6/27/2023. The six-member crew arrives with and begins much of the tear-off. They also complete installation of new plywood decking on much of the roof.Wednesday, 6/28/2023. The crew arrives on time, and the crew-lead communicates to me some of his concerns regarding roof installation. The gutters may be too high, or too low, or the leaf guards will get in the way, or the flashing won’t fit, etc. I spend a significant amount of time explaining what I expect and helping to figure it out. This is supposed to be an “experienced roofing crew” so it was frustrating that my direction was necessary. I spend significant time that day monitoring and correcting installation concerns, Most of the concerns were work done by one individual. Two big issues were found when the roofers installed a large area of new plywood and new drip-edge. I was unsure if the roofer involved could speak sufficient English to communicate, so I called their office to get advice. The "superintendent" came promptly, directed the activity to my satisfaction, and told the crew to manufacture a "custom" piece of drip edge to complete the work. At my direction they also corrected improperly installed plywood. Again I'm wondering: Why am I paying these people so much when I have to supervise them?Note that the ice/water layer was not the correct product. The installed product did not match the one provided during the estimate. I should have been more careful when reviewing the contract as it did not specify a specific brand or type.Thursday, 6/29/2023. They arrive with the custom pieces, correct some mistakes, make a few more serious mistakes (shortcuts they thought I wouldn’t notice: location and overlapping of the bottom courses), I’m in my yard a lot of the day supervising.Friday,6/30/2023. One crew member arrives to "tape" the attic vents. He arrives with no flashlight for a dark attic so I give him one to use and keep. He also arrives with the wrong "duct tape" which should be aluminum-tape not fiber-tape. Fortunately I had the correct aluminum-tape for him to use. Otherwise he would have installed the wrong tape.In the end the roof is installed (mostly) correctly. But it shouldn't have been so difficult.
Great roofers!!
Metropolitan Roofing was an excellent company to work with from start to finish. I received multiple bids before selecting Metro for their price, thoroughness and willingness to work with my requests. They put me on the schedule quickly and had a full crew complete the tear off and install (OC shingle roof + fascia) in less than a week. The company they contracted with for gutters (Allstar Gutter & Son) was also professional and kept an open line of communication.
We got 5 bids for our roof, gutters and 2 skylights replaced. Metropolitan Roofing came in with the best bid, for the exact same thing the others bid on. Sales guy, Rich did a great job of of doing what he does, sales. We felt very good about our decision to use Metropolitan Roofing. Quality workmanship from the crew, and quality materials used on the roof. Roof looks beautiful. We highly recommend this local team of roofers.
The whole team at Metropolitan Roofing was on top of every detail all through the process from initial site visit/estimating, scheduling, thru final walk through. They were attentive to my concerns and very detailed. I appreciated them and their ongoing communication. I Can not speak to the quality of the materials they installed, but it looks great. Longevity will be key. I expect my roof to last for the next 50 years. I’ll likely be dead by then :) I trust/hope there will be no reason to contact them for a follow up issue of any sort although I do get the impression they’d snap to it and resolve it. So far, I’m super happy I chose them of the 3 estimates I collected :)
I had Metropolitan do my house roof a year ago and thought they did such a great job, I decided to have them add a metal roof to my outbuilding/shop. My main reason for the metal was due to fallen needles and branches not easily sliding off the asphalt shingles.
I was not disappointed in this companies' performance. They came in a little less expensive than other quotes, which pleased me. They removed the old asphalt shingles, cleaned up at end of every day, and was on the job from start to finish.
Communication was very good from front office to the workers. Metropolitan utilizes a customer portal which explains scheduling and cost status during the job. I was very impressed with this type of communication. There was also plenty of phone calls and e-mails to maintain timely project status of issues and questions. Char, Jasmine, Zoe, & Richard were continuously on top of things and great to work with.
I am very, very, very pleased with this companies' job and how the roof looks now.
Metropolitan was professional, efficient, and left a clean site. I especially liked the technological methods they employ to provide a comprehensive and quick proposal to which they adhered. Also competitive pricing.
We had a great experience with Metropolitan Roofing. They were competitive on price and cared about my business. They ensured that my old roof was properly vented, kept to schedule, and cleaned up nicely. Recommended.
I cannot recommend Metropolitan Roofing. I first hired the company in 2014 for a different house when it was Vince and Sound Roofing and that job was fantastic with no issues. I thought I would have the same experience in 2022 but I was wrong. I wasn't going to do any surveys but since I am being asked.. Some of the mistakes that were made were beyond belief. Most issues were resolved but some I'll have to look at as long as I live here. Two major issues were nails that show through eves and my furnace chimney cap was shoved all the way down which forced all the exhaust smoke into my house. That issue was resolved by hiring an HVAC company to diagnose and repair. The nails showing above my front porch was resolved by them adding plywood on the porch ceiling to hide the mistakes. Overall not a good experience and the communication was extremely poor.
Very satisfied and highly recommend Metropolitan Roofing. From initial contact through installation great communication and no surprises
These guys did a profesional job from start to finish!
Metropolitan Roofing has good customer service, they have good follow up, and they do a quality job with attention to the detail. We experienced a problem with delivery of the proper product, timing of delivery, and timing of correcting the product. A third-party is used for the product and delivery which is where the breakdown occurred. Metropolitan Roofing was responsive to our concerns but with a little deflecting of responsibility to the third-party versus owning the responsibility. Overall, we are very satisfied with the job and end result!
Metropolitan is knowledgeable and performed its work very well.
