What causes large gaps between window frames and the brick of my home? It looks like someone tried to caulk it previously, but it just pulled away again.

wondering if there's a product out there that one can spray on the inside of an exterior wall on a wood basement to waterproof? I had some minor leakage on an exterior basement wall. The basement is made of treated plywood and there isn't any signs of rot but there is some mildew as well as a recently deceased colony of ants. Is there a product that will seal or help seal any further leakage that is antibacterial?

Can we fix the interior of a "bow-shaped" window or do we have to hire someone to remove and replace it? The lovely "bow" or "arched" window which is above and separate from the two windows below it...needs to be replaced for COSMETIC reasons. The bow-shaped window has 4 pieces of (?) that created a pattern inside the window, but over the years, those 4 pieces have fallen down and it's ruined the appearance of the window. Other than that...the window is perfect but we know it will cost a lot of money to have it removed and replaced and the co. who installed it in 2004, went out of business. Nothing pressing, but we would really like to remove it, put the 4 pieces back where they belong but with apoxy and and put it back or remove it and replace it ourselves. Any ideas out there would be highly appreciated! Sorry, but I can't find the photos I took of it. Thanks! :)

Carpenter bees out of reach! Anything that can be done? There are a few carpenter bee holes high up and out of reach without a more significant ladder than I care to mess with at the moment. The holes are right under the roof, about 40 feet off the ground. There is a upper-level porch that is roughly even with them vertically, but about 15-20 feet beside them. The ideal and long term solution seems to be to use a drione or similar pesticide dust and spray into the holes with a puffer. But not being able to access the holes directly, the best I can do is spray a liquid carpenter bee aerosol stream from the porch and repeat often. Outside of getting a big ladder or hiring a professional, are there any other tricks to help a DIYer like myself?

What are the top 3 energy efficiency upgrades I can do to my 2-story home?
Feb 18, 2014

When it comes to energy efficiency, adding insulation is the most affordable upgrade that can be done to a 2-story home. With good insulation, there will be an immediate return on the money spent. A high performance energy efficient heating system is also very important. Energy efficient heating and good insulation work hand in hand by paying the homeowner back hundreds of dollars a year, along with the home being much more comfortable to live in. Lifetime aluminum metal roofing should rank very high on the priority list for an energy efficient home; certainly among the top three upgrades. The product itself is made from a very high percentage of post consumer aluminum. It is also considered to be among the most long lasting sustainable roofs that can be put on a home. There are aluminum roofs that are well over 100 years old in the USA. These roofs have very high reflectivity, which equates to high energy savings during the summer months or in the south where air conditioning is needed. These energy star rated roofs can save as much as 30% on energy as it relates to cooling costs. With proper insulation, energy efficient heating, and metal roofing, the home will have optimum energy efficiency and continue to remain at the most comfortable temperature based on the given seasons.

I would like to have a garage that is as inviting as my house. I live in Texas. We drive a lot. The last thing we see when we leave our house and the first thing we see when we return is the garage. It's pretty demoralizing to open the garage door only to find a really ugly, stained garage floor. What is the best approach to refinishing a garage floor?
