Guildmaster Q&A

Company History

Cabinetry & Construction, Inc. (CCI) has been serving Richmond homeowners since 1992 when the founder, Rob Wright, saw a need for a construction company that could offer the highest levels of craftsmanship and design for remodeling and renovation projects. Our specialty is the sensitive renovation of older homes - in fact, our slogan is "We bring new life to old homes."

Scope of Work

While our origins and name point to a long-standing appreciation for exquisite cabinetry, woodworking, and finished carpentry, we have evolved into a full-service design/build firm. Our projects include everything from large-scale additions and gourmet kitchens, to luxurious bathrooms, sumptuous libraries, and even wine cellars. Similarly, we can help clients capture new living space to fulfill a dream. Whether it is converting a basement into an entertaining media room, or outfitting a real home office that provides that enviable 5-minute commute, we always seek design solutions that are in keeping with the architectural character of the property.

Typical Workload

We typically take on no more than 3-4 new projects per month. We purposefully keep the workload to a level that allows the owner to be involved, especially in the design phase. We also take follow-up and warranty work very seriously, going back to our clients to make sure they are happy with the projects some weeks and months after we are done.

More than 90% of your clients would recommend your firm to a friend. How do you earn such high praise from your customers?

Our clients seem to value the creativity we are able to bring to our projects as a design/build firm. We are able to convert a client's dream of what their home can be into sketches and conceptual drawings, then working plans, and finally the end result. Concurrently, we maintain an eye toward fresh new approaches and state of the art materials. Rather than put our stamp on a project, or build something so trendy that it will date quickly, we place great emphasis on the timelessness of what we build. We bring old houses into the present gracefully, providing modern standards of comfort and livability while seamlessly joining new to old.

Client Profile

First is often a deep and abiding appreciation for the craftsmanship associated with older structures. Richmond is fortunate to be home to a number of neighborhoods filled with architecturally rich, older homes. Our clients often spend a lifetime investing in a home that they have come to love and feel a need to preserve.

Approach to Working With Clients

Our mission is to provide great craftsmanship but also to work in as efficient manner as possible. Like any business, we know that communication is the key to smooth-working relationships. From the start, we work with our clients extensively in the early stages of the project to understand their needs and desires. The time we all invest in the beginning enables us to build those wishes into the project and convert them into reality. Our experience has told us that the best way for a client to work with a contractor is to be open about needs, expectations, and budget. In return, the contractor must make it clear just what the contract is to include. We are committed to a level of dialogue that keeps projects on schedule and within budget. Our goal throughout is to minimize surprises and to leave them thrilled with the results for years to come.

Why are you a builder/remodeler?

The company was born our of the owners' appreciation for the quality and craftsmanship of older homes, and their recognition that the homes, while beautiful, could be made more functional for modern lifestyles. Initially, our concern was about maintaining and preserving the historic buildings that are the backdrop for the rich and diverse city of Richmond. Later, we came to realize that the modification and preservation of these existing homes has a positive environmental impact. Remodeling a home rather than tearing it down preserves our history; and is inherently "greener" than building a newer home in some distant suburb.

What should clients bring to the table and contribute during the construction process?  What can they do to help make the relationship a success?

We tend to spend a lot of time in the planning stage, learning what the client wants - and doesn't want - so our design is the best fit possible. It is helpful for them to have done some homework. Many cut out things they like from decorating and other shelter magazines. Others pick up useful ideas from home and garden tours. We have extensive questionnaires that we provide clients for some of the more detailed projects that ask them numerous questions about how they live, how they want to live, what they like, what they dislike, etc. The key is communication. The more clients convey their expectations to us, the more on target we will be in our design and execution.

How do you market your company?

We understand that most people are not very experienced in remodeling so the process can be intimidating and foreign. Nothing helps to calm those fears and give people confidence like a solid referral from a close friend. Therefore, the core of our marketing involves nurturing and building our client base. Over time, we have amassed a loyal following of repeat customers in key, select neighborhoods filled with beautiful, older homes that are in constant need of repair and upgrades. Their projects and all-important referrals sustain us. We are delighted that a great majority of our customers consider themselves "Clients for Life."

What's next for your company

We're interested in sustainable, "green" building. We would love to interest our clients more in the benefits of green building and show them that these technologies can be incorporated beautifully into an older home. We have recently become a dealer of a line of solar energy products.

Great Service, Cabinetry & Construction takes great pride in their work. Works very efficiently and clean. They stay within the scheduled time, very reliable. No job to small or to large, if they can't handle it, they know who can. Offer great advice.

We couldn't be happier with our project. Rob, Connie, Andrew, Dennis, Chris and the others who worked on our renovation/addition were outstanding. They were all easy to get along with and addressed any issue, small or large, quickly and with a level of expertise that we weren't sure existed any more. On the day when the work was completed, Rob pulled up the heavy paper that had been covering and protecting our new floors and counter tops, and I couldn't believe what I was seeing. It was 100% what I had hoped for and could only have imagined. The level of fine craftsmanship is beyond any that we have seen locally. We can't recommend Cabinetry & Construction highly enough.

The relationship established between Rob, my husband and me was extremely valuable. We always knew (and still know) that we could get in touch with him about anything and he would respond almost immediately. We quickly developed a trust in Rob because of his ability to communicate with us as well as his obvious talent in his field. Also, having Connie Broski just an email or phone call away was invaluable. We could discuss anything, large or small with her and she would either get the answer to us or get in touch with Rob who would then contact us almost immediately. Very valuable! And of course the quality of the workmanship is phenomenal. Rob and his workers are just about the best we could have imagined. Not only were they a pleasure to have around (and around they certainly were for a long time!!) but their abilities to construct and trim and solve problems were outstanding.

While working on any old house, there are always hidden challenges. I am a detail oriented person and it is the small things that make a design project sucessful. There were specific goals I had, I was able to express my ideas, Cabinetry & Construction was able to translate my desgin ideas into reality. My kitchen is EXACTALY what I wanted and just as important, delivered on time.

Because Rob was both the designer and the builder of the project, he was able to provide insights into how to best use my admittedly small budget to achieve the results I hoped for.

Comment Area Of Satisfaction Richmond, VA Mar 25, 2008

The location of the addition as well as the door from the existing space to the new space looks as though it's always been there which is amazing since our house is very old!!

Comment Budget Richmond, VA Mar 25, 2008

Rob was really great at understanding that there was a fixed budget for this project, and he did a great job at giving us the best value to fit the budget and to fit right in with our old home's existing look and architectural style. This was extremely important to us, and Rob completely understood that! Thanks Rob!

Comment Schedule Richmond, VA Mar 25, 2008

We'd heard so many horror stories about people rennovating/adding on, and we are so pleased to tell everyone that we had a fabulous experience on this project which was actually completed on schedule.

Comment Creative Solutions Richmond, VA Mar 25, 2008

The idea for the final location of the addition was brilliant(Hurray, Rob!), and has worked out far better than the former ideas would have...it gives my parents more privacy, is on part of the backyard that wasn't used much anyway, and it created an intimate little courtyard area that we look forward to using.

Comment Area Of Satisfaction Richmond, VA Dec 28, 2007

Designs were beautiful, all CCI employees were courteous, professional and talented and we appreciated the input from Rob in recommending designs and materials. Additionally, when we did have problems, they were taken care of promptly.

Comment Area Of Satisfaction Richmond, VA Dec 14, 2007

I think they were able to take the idea that we had and get more specific and find out if we could do the things that we wanted to do. The fact that they were able to do that really helped us during the process. It took a much shorter period of time for them to get our project up and running.

We had a big wedding this past weekend and had several parties in our home which has been in the family for years. Everyone who had seen it before C&C could not believe the difference. Very impressed with everything. We are very proud and thrilled with C&C's work.

This company goes the extra mile to cultivate on-going customer relationships. They don't forget about you after a job is completed. Cabinetry and Construction is unlike other contractors from this customer service aspect.

Comment Area Of Satisfaction Richmond, VA Nov 27, 2007

The level of trust in the integrity of the owner is evident. I know things will be done right or 'fixed' if not right.

Comment Recognize Excellence Richmond, VA Nov 27, 2007

Rob Wright is knowledgeable, patient and creatively addresses homeowner issues. I have always had the feeling that Rob cares as much about the customer's needs as he does 'the project.'

Comment Additional Comment Richmond, VA Nov 27, 2007

This is my first experience with a major remodel and despite the horror stories I heard about contractors, Rob and his crew were a pleasure to work with. I had very, very few issues arise during the project, and those were remedied quickly. I suspect that I could have had the work done for less, but I think this is a good example of getting what you pay for. Rob spent the time upfront to get a good idea of what I wanted, and that paid major dividends later in his being able to make excellent design decisions without requiring my constant input. In summary, this was a very positive experience, and I would highly recommend Cabinetry & Construction to anyone else.

About GuildQuality and our Guildmembers

Homebuilders, remodelers, real estate developers and home services companies pay GuildQuality for customer surveying and performance reporting. We refer to these companies as GuildQuality Members, Guildmembers, or members.

Our service helps Guildmembers monitor customer satisfaction and -- if they choose to publish survey feedback on our public website at guildquality.com -- articulate the quality of their service for prospective customers.

All of the Guildmember information we publish at guildquality.com has been provided to us either by the member (such as pictures of work and biographical information) or by their customers via one of our surveys (customer comments, performance summaries, and reviews).

Surveys, Comments and Reviews

All of the customer feedback that we publish is derived from the customers we survey. Our Guildmembers provide us with their customers' contact information, we conduct the surveys, they receive the feedback, and -- if they have chosen to make their feedback public -- the member's performance report is automatically updated to reflect the response. Members may choose to publish a summary of either all of their feedback or their most recent twelve months of feedback.

In addition to average performance ratings and survey statistics, GuildQuality also publishes two types of customer commentary: Comments and Reviews.

A comment has been provided by a survey respondent in response to any one of the survey questions we ask, and a member may or may not choose to publish it. Often customers provide unsolicited testimonials or compliments, and members can choose to share these comments in their published performance report.

Many Guildmembers choose to participate in our formal review process. These members have added an additional question on their survey: "If you'd like to provide a public review of your experience working with the Guildmember, please share it here." In contrast to comments, which a member selects to have published, we publish all reviews, provided they are at least 30 words long. With each review, we include a one to five star rating provided by the survey respondent.
