Sanding gets gooey So every time I sand a surface that has primer and paint, the two seem to melt into a gooey mess. Right now Im painting a red door. When I sanded the first layer of red before adding the second layer, certain spots would turn into pink goo balls. I can scrape it off but this leaves a hole in the primer. Any idea why this is happening? And also, what's the best solution for fixing a hole in primer? I tried adding more primer, but that left a very noticeable outline between the layers. Spackle seems to work... but im guessing thats not what I should be using for exterior applications. Any help appreciated! Thanks

What is the best way to get latex paint out of carpet?
Jan 15, 2015

Here is the very short answer, but has been effective over the past decade and a half.

Start with Warm Soapy Water (Should probably get the majority depending on the density of the spill) and if that is not enough fire power use Denatured Alcohol.  Always try to avoid chemicals if possible as different carpet reacts differently to chemicals depending on the actual material and dye they use.

What is the best way to clean smudges and marks off of walls painted with flat paint?
Aug 27, 2017

Typically flat paint is not cleanable, unless your flat paint is Sherwin Williams Duration or Emerald in which case you can use some warm water and a sponge.

If it’s not one of those two products you really don’t have many good options.  You can try cleaning it with warm water and a soft sponge, but be very careful not to remove the paint from the wall.  You can also try touching up the dirty areas by feathering the paint in, and as a last resort you can repaint the wall.

Flat paint typically isn’t the most live able finish, but it does provide you with the richest appearance.  Sherwin Williams Duration or Emerald gives you the best of both worlds.  Duration is my companies go to interior wall paint, I highly recommend it.

Is painting bathroom tile a good solution for tile that is in good condition but not a desirable color?
Feb 24, 2014

Where is the tile, John? If it is on the floor or anywhere near bathroom moisture, painting is probably not the best solution.

John,

I must confess to never having seen that application.

I am not sure the finish would look good or even hold up over the long term.  I would also be worried about the potential vapor retarder level interplay with what is behind the tile.

We are looking at houses and found on that we like but it has a CAT SMELL, especially in the basement. Is there any way to truly remove the smell?
Sep 20, 2014

Cat smell or cat urine smell?

If it is the latter, I have had success with Nature's Miracle.  If the smell is just the animal, that will diminsh with time and with changing out blinds, flooring, wall coverings, etc.

I would echo what Steven says. Generally, flat paint is not washable. If you look at the cleaning instrctions, it will talk about being "scrubbable". This means you have to scrub a layer of paint off to get the dirt out. That is why the Magic Eraser works for a while. Ultimately, if you can simply use a degreaser and a rag, do it. If not get ready to paint with a "washable" flat or matte finish. Benjamin Moore also makes a very washable matte finish called Scuff-X.

How can this be fix? It was done by a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. It also turn the spot a ugly yellow color.

Mr. Clean erasers work by using a very fine abrasive to remove either the offending dirt or the material that the dirt is in.  Think of them as a very fine grit sandpaper that is usually very gentle.  However, when used on paint, they will affect the finish causing it to spot on the wall.  The only way to repair this is to paint over it with the original color in the original finish.

How to match color when repair wooden doors scratched by dog
May 1, 2019

Good afternoon,

The picture of the door looks to have polyurethane applied. If this is the case, that’s most likely an oil based finish. If you are trying to apply a latex base interior paint it will not work unless the finish is completely stripped off.

With out physically seeing this myself I can only speculate this to be the issue. The proper tradesmen to contact would be a Painter.

Dog damage to door: What is the best way to repair it?

Mary Nolan answered:

As with the previous comments, you can use sandpaper to smooth out some of the damage, but be sure to rub the scratches along the grain of the wood. Next, apply mineral spirits (these are solvents made from paint thinner and petroleum) over the sanded area. Spread on wood filler with a Spackle knife to the damaged parts and allow it to dry as per the filler’s directions. After the wood filler has dried, lightly sand the area once again and brush away any dust before priming and painting your door.

While the image shows damage to the inside of your door, your pet may try scratching on the outside of door and its weather stripping in an attempt to be let inside. In order to prevent future damage to that part of your door, you can add a piece of vinyl lattice that matches the color of your doorframe. Cut the lattice to the length of the doorjamb. Place it over your foam weather stripping. Check to see that your door continues to close properly. Use finishing nails every foot to tack the vinyl lattice securely in place. A small amount of spackling will cover up the nail heads. Now the lattice will protect your weather stripping from further damage.

The right type of door for your home can make a huge difference. We install ProVia doors and they offer DuraGuard Series Storm Doors, which are ideal for keeping pets safely inside with their non-removable stainless steel screening.

Best of luck with your dog and your door repair!

As others have said, Mr. Clean Magic Erasers work quite well without compromising the integrity of the wall finish.
