Guildmaster Q&A

Company History

BOARDWALK NORTH was established in 1988, by its Founder Ed Stewart CGR, after spending four years in the military, serving as Non commissioned Officer in the Army Missile Defense system. Immediately following his tour of duty in the Army, Ed began work and joined the ranks in the Architectural and Building Products Division of Reynolds Aluminum. Having spent 12 years serving as a Sales and General Division Manager responsible for the daily operations both Sales and Construction, Ed decided it was time to ply his acquired wealth of knowledge and corporate training, coupled with his education of Tool Design and drafting and left to begin fulfilling his life long dream of becoming an entrepreneur in the Home Building and Remodeling industry by starting a Design/Build/Remodeling Company.

Scope of Work

Our scope of work varies from client to client. Over the years our scope of work has ranged from million dollar-plus new home construction projects to replacement windows. We like to say, "One call does it all!"

Typical Workload

BOARDWALK NORTH is structured to provide our clients an extremely personal experience; after all, this is no doubt a relationship business, too. We maintain our work load by assigning a Lead Carpenter to each and every project, for the sake of maintaining a constant daily vigil of completing the Company Mission Statement (see the Company Mission Statement (www.boardwalknorth.com). This process allows our resources to focus solely on the clients at hand providing them with the design / build / remodeling experience, we promised. We feel this proven approach has contributed greatly to meeting or exceeding the expectations of our client's borne out by our Award Winning Customer satisfaction results (see www.guildquality.com).

Team Makeup

Our team is comprised of a highly skilled staff of Master and Journeyman Carpenters, as well as a highly educated and experienced staff of expert kitchen, bath and conceptual designers. These two skilled "teams" work in concert with one another to bring a complete package to our clients that is designed and built with precision, care and expertise. The CEO maintains and ongoing vigil to staff BOARDWALK NORTH with only the highest educated and skilled personnel to ensure our company philosophy is conveyed through our wide variety of projects and designs.

Personal

Our CEO has served for many years on executive levels in both the state and federal government, and most recently as the New Hampshire State President of the Home Builders & Remodeler's Association of New Hampshire (HBRANH), and he is the current the sitting President for the HBRANH Southern Region. He is a current Board Member on the national Association of Home Builders, in Washington, DC. Locally, Ed is a Board of Trustees for Parkland Medical Center in Derry, NH. These affiliations allow our company to remain current, informed and connected on the latest legislation and code enforcement modifications and community development. All of these professional relationships allow our Company to pass this knowledge on to our many clients and industry associations. All of which had made us a stronger and more knowledgeable company in the process.

More than 90% of your clients would recommend your firm to a friend. How do you earn such high praise from your customers?

The bar is set pretty high at BOARDWALK NORTH. We strive to achieve superior customer satisfaction as the most trusted and reliable provider of residential design / build services. With that in mind, every member of our team is committed to fulfilling this level of trust and services to every one of our clients.

Client Profile

The more educated the Client the easier the process for them and us, naturally. However, we work for almost all types of clients, but our most intriguing clients are those that come to us with the most challenging project. Generally, this would be a project that brings the biggest quality of life change, for them, once we are finished. No matter what happens in the economy, families will always grow, as Baby Boomers grow older; a lot of in-laws will come home to be with the family they love. We enjoy enhancing the quality of life for these types of families. The reward seems to be magnified when we have altered the environment for a family so they can go in the direction they have envisioned.

Approach to Working With Clients

As previously stated, we think of our clients like family. We maintain the same level of integrity and commitment expected from one of your closest friends. This approach transcends every level of BOARDWALK NORTH, making the design build experience a positive one.

How do you use technology in your work?

Technology surrounds every aspect of our company, and we eagerly integrate technology at every opportunity to promote our quality product. Some examples would be the use of sophisticated estimating and time tracking software programs, and 3-D imaging and construction drawing software, cell phones with and cameras on every project site and of course extensive use of email throughout the company, keeping our customer's and or team members in constant communication. We are constantly searching out new and innovative technologies to help enhance our clients' experience, and make the building process more efficient and affordable.

Ongoing Staff Training and Development

All levels of our staff and management are involved in a "continuing education training" program. This consists of safety and job site awareness training (all of our field personnel are OSHA Certified), frequent attendance to conferences and seminars to stay current on codes, best installation practices, techniques and updating of new products. These efforts, combined with frequent in-house seminars, are designed to give our staff the continuing education they need to provide the most contemporary methods and best practices available, ensuring a safely built, quality project.

Motivating Employees

This is an easy topic to discuss. There is a level of pride that exists at all levels of the company. This pride in quality and customer service is what motivates every employee of this company. The satisfaction we see on the faces of our clients at the conclusion of a project is the strongest motivator, and is a genuine part of who we are at BOARDWALK NORTH.

Why are you a builder/remodeler?

We feel most homeowners that set out to build a project, whether it be a new home or an addition/remodeling project are generally at a loss as to how to begin the process with any degree of confidence or certainty when it comes to finding a company of proven ability.

The founder's Vision was to create and Brand a Company that would immediately garner Trust, Respect and worry free experience, ultimately becoming the "Most Trusted name in the business". As such, we are proud of our "Certified Graduate Remodeling" designation (CGR, see NAHB.Com), and our "Certified New Hampshire Builder" designation (see Construction Institute Of New Hampshire Program), and our Customer Satisfaction Award accolades (See Guild Quality) our multiple Gold Cornerstone Award Winning projects (see HBRANH.com) our involvement and membership as a sitting Board Member on the National Association of Home Builder's, and our community involvement with local charities and hospitals (see Parkland Medical Center) all of which speaks directly to our intended vision of producing a company that is well on its way to becoming the most recognizable and Trusted name in the business.

Our company is designed to be "user-friendly", as if our parents had to do business with us. We wanted to establish a company that provided a high quality: full service design/build/remodeling experience, at a price point commensurate with the expectations of such a company. Our extended lifetime service plan (to qualified customers) and our one-price, one stop shopping philosophy, coupled with our exceptionally high peer group Guild Quality rating would indicate we have delivered on our promise to our vast number of previous clients.

What should clients bring to the table and contribute during the construction process?  What can they do to help make the relationship a success?

Our most successful projects centers around a client who brings an open mindedness to the relationship, and a client who isn't afraid to join forces with us in the successful completion of their project. In short, we ask them to become part of the Team rather than develop a "wait and let's see what goes wrong" attitude. We work hard to alleviate the common barriers often found between the Customer and the Remodelor or Builder thereby eliminating the barriers that generally hinder the collaborative effort. We want to have a relationship with our clients where we can work together towards a common goal of achieving their vision and dream. We ask all of our clients to keep the lines of communication open. We like to remind them that "all big problems were once a small problem". We invite them to keep the lines of communication open and the questions coming!

What are the biggest challenges facing companies like yours in the building industry?  What are some of the challenges facing your business right now?

With all challenges, comes a reward.
Obviously, rising fuel and materials costs are forcing us to redefine and rethink our practices, and become more strategic in the marketplace. But one of our biggest challenges is educating the consumer on a more efficient and economical way to approach the building process. Some clients have hung on to a paradigm about remodeling that was instilled years ago. Getting past that barrier can be a challenge, but immensely rewarding when we have guided a client through the turmoil of the design build process, and see the joy on their faces at the completion of the project.

What's next for your company

We are excited that we are using our resources to grow the Kitchen and Bathroom portion of our business. We have taken great steps over the past year to enhance the quality and price of our premier kitchen products. This coupled with the acquisition of key personnel and new technology and product lines will enable us to provide a wide variety of kitchen products across the entire price point spectrum. This year is going to be exciting!

About GuildQuality and our Guildmembers

Homebuilders, remodelers, real estate developers and home services companies pay GuildQuality for customer surveying and performance reporting. We refer to these companies as GuildQuality Members, Guildmembers, or members.

Our service helps Guildmembers monitor customer satisfaction and -- if they choose to publish survey feedback on our public website at guildquality.com -- articulate the quality of their service for prospective customers.

All of the Guildmember information we publish at guildquality.com has been provided to us either by the member (such as pictures of work and biographical information) or by their customers via one of our surveys (customer comments, performance summaries, and reviews).

Surveys, Comments and Reviews

All of the customer feedback that we publish is derived from the customers we survey. Our Guildmembers provide us with their customers' contact information, we conduct the surveys, they receive the feedback, and -- if they have chosen to make their feedback public -- the member's performance report is automatically updated to reflect the response. Members may choose to publish a summary of either all of their feedback or their most recent twelve months of feedback.

In addition to average performance ratings and survey statistics, GuildQuality also publishes two types of customer commentary: Comments and Reviews.

A comment has been provided by a survey respondent in response to any one of the survey questions we ask, and a member may or may not choose to publish it. Often customers provide unsolicited testimonials or compliments, and members can choose to share these comments in their published performance report.

Many Guildmembers choose to participate in our formal review process. These members have added an additional question on their survey: "If you'd like to provide a public review of your experience working with the Guildmember, please share it here." In contrast to comments, which a member selects to have published, we publish all reviews, provided they are at least 30 words long. With each review, we include a one to five star rating provided by the survey respondent.

Important Information about choosing a Builder, Remodeler, or Contractor
