Renewal Construction was founded by Peter Michelson in 2001. Peter is a fourth generation contractor who grew up in the construction industry. After earning a BA in History from the University of Michigan, Peter moved to San Francisco where he was a member of the Carpenter's Union and did renovation work on the old Victorian Homes. From there, Peter traveled extensively for a few years throughout Europe, Asia and the Middle East, which included some time teaching in Taiwan. Peter enjoyed his teaching experience, so when he returned to the states, he got a Master's degree in Waldorf Education, and soon landed at The Waldorf School of Atlanta. After 5 years of teaching at The Waldorf School, Peter felt the call of construction once again, and soon thereafter founded Renewal Construction. In 2004, Peter's brother David joined Renewal Construction, bringing more than 20 years of construction experience to the company.
Renewal Construction was created as a full-service general contractor that offers kitchen, bathroom and attic renovations, as well as major additions and whole house renovations. The company formed its Small Projects Division about 5 years ago to meet growing demand for renovations focused on one room or one part of the house. The company offers feasibility studies, which include preliminary design work and cost analysis. And we also offer a design/build option for those that prefer the "one-stop-shop."
RCI had four full time construction project managers and each project manager is typically assigned 3 projects at any given time. We are careful to stagger the start dates of the projects to ensure that on one is ever overloaded at the ever so critical mobilization stage of the project. The projects may range in size from $10,000 to $400,000. And the projects may take anywhere from 2 weeks to 7 months. We typically complete from 50-70 projects per year.
Our company culture is deeply reflected in the way in which our company is structured. We are a team driven organization, where everyone has specific tasks assigned to them, yet is always working to help support the other. Our company structure is roughly divided into the sales and preconstruction team, which focuses on sales, pricing, design and finish selections. And the production side of the company, which focuses on the actual construction of the project. Each of these teams is supported by the marketing and administrative staff in the office.
Renewal Construction is committed to being a "green" company. Before there was a catchy name for it, green building was established at Renewal Construction as a guiding principle for the way we conduct our renovation projects. Our commitment shows in the quality of our work, and recognition for excellence within our industry. We are especially proud of our selection as an earthcraft Renovator of the Year and as a featured project on a new Discovery Communications TV show called "Renovation Nation."
Renewal Construction's success begins with its innovative approach to remodeling construction. It is an approach with the highest standards, from the company's Guaranteed Renovation to its commitment to green building to its comprehensive processes for guiding homeowners through remodeling projects. Renewal Construction believes that, for its clients, these standards result in improved remodeling experiences, homes with superior craftsmanship and projects that add greater total value to properties.
Part of Renewal's innovative approach to remodeling includes its Guaranteed Renovation which translates into peace of mind for homeowners going through renovation projects. The Guaranteed Renovation covers all projects over $50,000 and guarantees the end date and fixed cost. If Renewal misses the project delivery date, we refund to the client $200 for every calendar day we are late. Our craftsmanship is also guaranteed and never compromised. We do what we say and we're going to do and actually deliver on our promises.
We have company-wide book studies that we discuss on a weekly basis, we attend conferences together as a company, we subscribe to trade publications at the office and we have software training for our employees.
We want to continue to strengthen the systems we've created, to deliver projects in shorter time periods, to develop higher levels of design work, to hire an AIA certified architect in the future, to deepen our commitment and ability to be a "green" company and to become Universal Design (Aging-In-Place) specialists.
