2-Story Addition

These established clients surprised us one day with the wonderful news that they were expecting their first child. In preparation for this, they presented us with the classic design problem of adding onto a Cape Cod house without ruining the look. We pointed out another problem: the baby was due just about when we would have the house completely torn apart. They assured us that if we could handle the first problem, they could handle the second. We designed a two-story addition off the back of the house that featured a sunroom, mudroom, and wrap-around porch on the first floor, and a full master suite, laundry room, and extended storage space on the second floor. As an added bonus, the two traditional Cape Cod bedrooms upstairs (one of which is the new nursery) now have full height ceilings on the back side. We preserved the look of the Cape Cod by extending the original ridge-line higher than the ridge-line of the addition, and by adding the wrap-around porch to soften the effect of the two story addition. Within this presentation, look for how we handled problems with the flood elevation, HVAC, chimney, and dogs. True to their word, mom never asked us to lay off the nail guns during nap time, and they tell us that the child can now sleep through a military invasion.
