Kitchen and Master Suite Remodel

Mix, Match, Mingle The kitchen's role is to be the hub of family life. With deft space planning and a playful mix of colors and materials, we created a space where people wanted to congregate and cook. An eclectic but understated combination of materials reflects the owners' European background. Some of the maple cabinets have a clear stain; others are aniline-dyed. Concrete countertops and a stainless-steel backsplash complement the warm wood. A laminate floor echoes the smooth cabinetry surfaces, while satisfying the owners' wish for a durable material that's also easy on the feet. A new window and glass doors brought an open, airy atmosphere to a formerly dark, dated kitchen. Even with a wine cooler, convection oven, gas grill, double refrigerator, and central work island, the kitchen never feels crowded. The rounded eating and conversation space welcomes friends and family but keeps them out of the cook's way. Light, air, and storage - the big three in a master bath. This renovation gave the clients all of the above, plus their whole wish list of features, from a generous tub to a separate shower to a double vanity. A large skylight in the sloping ceiling above the tub invites bathing by moonlight. Neutral 2x2 tiles soften the glass and steel fixtures and play up the yellow wash of color. At the clients' request, we custom-designed a maple, glass, and steel double vanity based on one spotted in a European magazine. We chose not to conceal all the storage but used the upper shelves as a sculptural element. A contemporary painting disguises a wall-mounted medicine cabinet.
