WIDER APPEAL - Northwest DC kitchen remodel
The owners of this Northwest DC condo wanted more elbow room in their galley kitchen. A space-conscious fix came with bringing down a wall—and the dreaded popcorn ceiling—to open up the kitchen to the adjacent double-height dining and living space. Matte white cabinetry and integrated appliances make the kitchen feel even bigger, while the peninsula’s slim engineered quartz counter extends as a buffet into the dining area. Just beyond the wall ovens, tall cabinets with convenient pullout storage up the efficiency and capacity of the former closed-in pantry. Two white shelves pop against the gray glass back splash and reflect the stainless details—including a boxy custom exhaust hood—that complete the clean, minimalist palette. Also on the client’s wishlist: maximize the condo’s coveted views. To that end, the kitchen’s streamlined design doesn’t dare detract from the picture-perfect wooded park grounds beyond. Opening up the kitchen also created uninterrupted sight lines to the adjoining room’s balcony views and flooded the space with natural light. Minimalist track heads and LED spots—placed within the realigned soffits—combine to provide additional ambient and task lighting.Under the kitchen window, a breakfast nook may boast the best seat in the house. A comfortable banquette—complete with drawer storage below—stands on stainless legs above the kitchen’s durable, low-maintenance luxury vinyl tile (installed right on top of the existing floor). A right-sized, glass-top table mirrors light while rounding out the perfect spot for morning coffee and convo.
