I have cracks in my basement concrete. What type of expert can tell me if the problem is serious? How do I find someone who can give me an unbiased appraisal?

Jeffery Monti answered:

I jsut had a new house built and the concrete foundation had a settling crack that ran from the casement window to the floor.  THe only way we resolved it was to hire a local basement waterproofing company (Crack-X - Natick, MA.) who utilized polyurethane injection to seal/fill the crack from the floor up to the window.  It was rouhgly $700.00 for the job.  Some DIY Kit info I found useful can be found at website:

Hope this is useful.

Thanks.

All concrete has cracks. The difference is if it leaking or getting worse. Call the local wterproofing or mudd jacking contractor for a site visit.

The roof and foundation of my house needs to be fixed. If I get the roof done first because it is leaking, will it be affected when the foundation is fixed?

Shannon Alberts answered:

Roof first, then foundation. (not saying that just because I'm a roofer :)
Gutters are likely involved too.

Fixing the foundation should not undo any efforts spent on the roof and gutters.

Hire a structural engineer to determine if there is a problem that needs fixing.  If there is he will give you a report and or drawing detailing what to do.  Then call 2 or 3 Class A Building Contractors who are in good standing with BBB, DPOR, have sent you certificates of insurance and current references have checked out. Give them each a copy of the engineers report so they know how to qoute the work and go with the one you feel most comfortable with.

Fixing the roof first is crucial to prevent further damage. When addressing the foundation later, ensure the work doesn't affect the newly repaired roof. For roofing services, contact us at baystateroofingmasonry.com

Agreeing with most of the other comments here, we would suggest fixing the roof first to correct any water issues that may stem from it (i.e. ponding water near foundation, etc.) as well as gutter repair or install to run the water from the roof away from the foundation and home . In addition, its a good idea to look at the ground around the home to ensure that during rain or precipitation events, the ground runoff water is flowing away from the home or at least divert it away from the home if possible (i.e. adding drainage, etc.) before addressing the foundation. If you hire foundation professionals that take the time and care to properly raise the home and replace or repair foundation correctly, there should be no issues with the roof or any other aspects of the home. Hire a fully insured and licensed company always! Hope this helps!

We have a small leak on the ceiling in a room and in the adjacent restroom there is mold growing on a certain part of the ceiling too.

The leak and mold are time sensitive. Mold can be hazardous to your health. Dealing with mold properly means removing the sheetock and insulation once the leak is fixed. Don't let anyone tell you they can seal it in place and paint ove it. It must be removed. The foundation work can get vey expensive if you wait too long so don't put that off too long.

Hope this helps.

I agree with what Yuri said and would like to add that it is imporatant to have it removed properly so as not to cross contaminate. Mold spores are microscopic in size and easily dispersed if not handled correctly.

The metal brackets weren't used in $17500 power brace system ! This is there alternative method of choice ? Should I file a compliant with BBB ?
Nov 1, 2018
  1.  Look at your contract and all the specifications of the project. See what is written about the installation.
  2.  Talk to the contractor. Question their choices.
  3. If not satisfied with the answers, write a review.

Greg,

What did the contractor say.  Why didn't she/he use them.  I would talk to the contractors before I file a complaint with the BBB.  Can you tell me more about the project?

This is really a tough situation because you have twice workload at your side but you nither able to decide the starting of your work. But you have to consider that if you start the roofing first then there is some possibility that when you want to start the foundation work then roof shouldn't get damaged so you have to start from foundation then Roofing. Because of first thing always first.

Now you know how you can get the work done properly and without any over budget issues. If you are still confused about then I can refer you a company which is really the professionals and provide you the best solutions for your work.

Contact the Floor Jack rep at the corporation that manufactures. They should have a list of vendors and send you proper installation standards. Best of Luck. Also we would recommend a structural engineer for your assistance.  Best of Luck #GuildQuality #ProTip
