How can I stay on good terms with our neighbors during a big construction project? We're building a new house in an old neighborhood in relatively tight quarters. We're starting out on friendly terms with our neighbors-to-be, but I can tell they are nervous, and I can understand why. Our construction is definitely going to be disruptive. What are some tips for us (and our contractor) to stay on good terms with them?

I have trim boards to install that will cap over exposed block foundation. What ways should I attach these? They will be primed and painted when installed.

Mitering corners with James Hardie Artisan Series siding We are considering using James Hardie's Artisan Series on the portions of our new house that will have siding instead of brick. Ideally, we'd skip corner board and go with mitered corners. I understand from a brief and casual conversation with a James Hardie representative that there may be a handful of good tips for how to have this come out looking as beautiful as it does in this picture. A couple examples: Given the angle of the siding, I don't think the cut will be exactly 45°. Also, I believe he suggested some sort of backing at the corners that will help keep the mitered seam from separating. Any advice?

Go visit the neighbors or take them to breakfast or dinner.  Or, send them a letter.  Bring a note pad and take any notes regarding their concerns.  Explain that you take pride in your home and will be doing some remodelling. This only helps the neighborhood home values as well as theirs.

How can I best get squirrels out of my attic and repair their hole? We recently moved into a house and have a problem with squirrels in the attic. They have access to the full attic and I can tell they have been through it but they seem to be doing a lot of traveling down the eaves. From all of the noise I get the feeling there are a number of them. We saw them going in and out of the hole in the photo I attached. I know I have some trees around the house to trim back to cut down on their access to the roof. Have you found any methods that work best to get them out of the attic? Also I am wondering what the best materials or methods would be to repair their hole?

What are the top 3 energy efficiency upgrades I can do to my 2-story home?
Feb 18, 2014

The first thing to reduce energy is to see where it is being wasted.

An energy audit with blower door test and infared camera is the best place to start.

The list of upgrades range from adding insulation, to replacing HVAC systems and everything in beteen, such as new windows and doors to installing smart theromstats. But because each home is different and has different needs the only way to be sure your upgrades are right for your home is to start with an energy audit.

Building product directories: I'm searching for a comprehensive directory of all building products and building product manufacturers. I'm searching for a comprehensive building product directory. I've found a couple, but they don't seem comprehensive. Two examples: http://www.arcat.com/divs/building_products.shtml http://sweets.construction.com Is there a single directory that includes every building product manufacturer and every building product? Or if not, every single one, most of them?

Can I install a laminate wood flooring on top of existing laminate wood flooring? The existing laminate is glued on a concrete pad very well and there is enough room by the baseboards and doors for the new floor to exist without having spacing issues. The new floor would be a 12mm floating floor with a pad underneath.
