How can I protect my homes interior from the icy cold. Our house was sided with insulated vinyl but was done quick and cheap apparently. No wrapping or other protection was put prior to being done. I have come upon a couple of the outside walls with no wrap, or foam behind the vinyl just the bare wood the house was built with gaps and all. I have tried sealing as many of the gaps and large cut holes with insulating foam and caulk but I'm sure this is pointless. Kitchen is the worst of all with cold air coming out of the cabinets and a cold concrete floor. Doing siding now is not an option due to the weather so is there something I can put on the outside to help us through another winter. I have thought of putting moving blankets on the outside to help. Not sure how long the heater can keep up constantly coming on set at 72*.

I recently discovered that the interior support for a slumpstone column that holds up a small roof overhang was missing or rotted. Is this a job for a mason? This may need some support while the slumpstone is being repaired or replaced.

How can I Mount a TV with a two column brick fireplace? My fireplace is the brown brick one. Basically I want to do what I've seen on this video with the grey wooden slabs going across, but I have a columned fireplace. I was thinking of having some type of metal rail going across (red drawing) with a support on the back (blue drawing). I did not want to mount it directly into the wall behind due to the paneling on that wall (picture 3). I am wondering what kind of rail or beam I could use that will still be sturdy enough to then install the TV mount to.

Roofing Replacement Farce About a year ago, I had to have my entire roof replaced. The owner of Blue Longhorn Roofing and Construction, Jesse Salas, said he would take care of me and that he was also getting me a "upgraded" roof. It took them almost 3 months to complete the job. In the middle he fired one crew and another had to start. They were all illegals. I asked the insurance inspector to come back out and make sure the job was completed properly. He said they don't do that. Now, after a recent storm blew through here I found shingles in my backyard. It is a two story house I obviously cannot go up there to look. I filed a claim with my insurance and while waiting for the inspector to come I went on Home Advisor and found a roofing contractor who lives nearby and he came and looked at the roof and took pictures. He questioned whether or not the insurance paid for a complete roof replacement. I assured him that they did to the tune of $6400+. He told me and showed me the pictures proving that there were 5 different colors of shingles used on the back side of the house where it cannot be seen from the street. He said he had never seen anything like it in all of his career. When the inspector came a few days later, he confirmed that there were 5 different colors of shingles used in an area of the roof that could not be seen from the street. (You can see it now because they are starting to build houses behind me and there are now streets). When I texted Jesse Salas about this he denied it. He said he would never do anything like that. He told me that it was probably the other roofer making that up in order to get a roofing job. I told him that I have proof and that the insurance inspector had also confirmed that. He said that he would come out and look and he would also send someone from his company to look at it and they would make it right. Someone came when I was not home and left a business card and no one has been back since. They won't answer their phones and are not returning emails or texts anymore. I told him that I either want my money back, the 5 different colors of shingles replaced with those that match the rest of the roof or the entire roof replaced. His last words to me were "you are not my only customer". I went by the address on his website: www.bluelonghornrc.com and it is a storage unit. I was not out to hurt the guy or his business, I just want this mess fixed. If this affects the sales price of my house then we will be talking lawsuit. Don't know what else to do. The fireplace in our home has hairline cracks running through it. I have not used it in three years now. When our home was built we did not have gas logs installed, but we asked that the vents be installed so that when we decided to have conversion to gas this would be one less issue. A contractor came and said the fireplace was not properly installed for this conversion. What advice do you have with my concerns?

Messy Mortar My wife and I are building a house and we love the messy mortar look. The sample they did were great and what they did up until brick inspection was also good. However, now it seems the mortar is a darker color and there are spots that are all white. Also, where the brick is vertical it looks orange. We are concerned how this will get fixed. I happened to be there when a brick mason was still there. Here is what he told me 1-Mortar was still trying, however it is still not the same color even after 6 days in texas heat 2-The orange color is due to them cutting the pieces with the saw, they go back later and do some type of wash to make it match 3-The all white patches can be correct easily They assured me it was not the finished product and they go back and touch things up and make it all match. Should we be concerned and anyone know the process of doing this type of work? We see it and get concerned because we don't feel it will match. We are meeting with our builder also. We just don't know what to believe. Any information is greatly appreciated. Here are some picture of our concerns

If a chimney needs rebuilding who do I look for? A roofer or a stone mason? My home is 59 years old and has a leak somewhere around the chimney that has been difficult to locate and stop permanently. It has cracks in the mortar on the side and top crown as well as some missing mortar. The flashing has been "fixed" with tar or roof caulk several times. Is it normal to need a removal and replacement of the chimney mortar after some period of time?

What is involved in switching my fireplace to gas? (time, cost, effort?) My fireplace could use an overhaul, it is a major focal point in my living room and remains wood burning.

It looks like the mason did a good job concerning the texture. But the color is way off. Unfortunatly its not easy to match new to old. The good news- Staining morter isnt hard to do if its not sealed. I suggest a few practice bricks and some best efforts at staining them to match, then do the rest. The bad news- it will probably never be pefect and if it is it will show after a few years of all that Texas weather torture.
