Company History

For several generations the Gradison family has been involved in the construction industry. Grandfather Wolford Gradison and his brother Jules Gradison came to Indianapolis in the 1930s and started Tri-State Construction, a road construction business. David Gradison, son of Wolford, became part of the business as well by pursuing development opportunities in the 1970s and 1980s. While Tri-State was sold in the early 1980's, David continued developing both residential and commercial properties.

In the 1980s, David's two sons, Mark and Joe Gradison, graduated from Indiana University with Real Estate degrees from the School of Business. After graduation, Mark and Joe took advantage of an opportunity to learn the development and home building business with their father. In 1986, Gradison Building Corp. was formed and is owned equally by Mark and Joe. Gradison Building Corp. has continued to build and remodel upscale custom homes on the north side of Indianapolis for over 20 years. GBC Development, LLC, a real estate development entity, is also owned and operated by Mark and Joe Gradison and focuses on development opportunities.

Scope of Work

We build and remodel upscale custom homes.

Our expertise ranges from custom kitchen and bath renovations to outdoor living spaces to one-of-a-kind homes featured and showcased in Midwest Living magazine and Better Homes and Gardens.

Workload and Staff

We build approximately 6 to 8 new custom homes per year and complete approximately 7 - 12 remodeling projects per year.

Team Makeup

We have a small staff (10 employees) but have several folks that have been with us for years. Our Controller just celebrated her 20 year anniversary with our company.

More than 90% of your clients would recommend your firm to a friend - this qualifies you as a GQ Guildmaster. How do you earn such high praise from your customers?

We build beautiful, distinctive homes and pride ourselves on developing genuine relationships - our clients become friends. Also through responsiveness and respect - each client has the ability to access us quickly via cell phone, text messages and email.

Client Profile

Professional, educated, age range 35-55, average household income of $200,000 plus.

How do you market your company?

Word of mouth (client referral) is our biggest marketing tool.

What should clients bring to the table and contribute during the construction process?  What can they do to help make the relationship a success?

Communicate - this is key for everyone involved and to exceed our client's expectations.

What are the biggest challenges facing companies like yours in the building industry?  What are some of the challenges facing your business right now?

The market is very slow right now, especially new home construction. However, we have several remodeling and development projects underway. Diversity keeps us afloat!

Is there anything else you'd like people to know about you and your company?

We were selected to build the 2007 Midwest Living magazine Idea home which was an honor. Our home was featured in the 2007 Sept./Oct. issue.

Also Mark Gradison was awarded Builder of the Year in January of 2007. The Builder of the Year is presented annually by the Builders Assoc. of Greater Indianapolis (BAGI) to an individual builder who has returned significant time and service to the residential building industry and who has worked diligently on behalf of his/her fellow association members over the past year.
