Criner Construction Company was founded by Robert Criner in 1977. Robert began his remodeling career in 1972 while still in high school as a helper for a small, local general contractor. He later moved to a more professional and established firm as a foreman. At the age of 21, Robert decided to go into business for himself and he founded Criner Construction Company. He began his business as a one-man operation, soliciting business in the evening and completing the jobs during the day.

With experience, he hired a couple of part-time people and trained them. In 1985 he incorporated the company which became Criner Construction Company, Incorporated. At first, Criner was uncertain whether his company would focus on building new homes or remodeling. Over time the company has grown to eleven full-time employees who successfully focus exclusively on residential remodeling. Recently the company has decided to adjust its name to reflect this focus. Today Criner Construction Company, Incorporated is doing business as Criner Remodeling.

Why Choose Criner Remodeling?

Being in the remodeling industry since 1977, Criner Remodeling has well over 30 years of experience in residential remodeling. This experience is available to you when you are ready to design and build your next addition, sunroom, kitchen, or bath. Robert Criner has said, "I don't want to be the biggest, but simply the best." To that end, Criner Remodeling invests heavily in its employees, giving them the best training available. Over time, this has resulted in over 100 local and national awards.

Recipient of the First National Remodeling Quality Award

In 1996, the first national Remodeling Quality Award program was jointly sponsored by the National Association of Home Builders Research Center and Remodeling magazine. It was modeled on the prestigious Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award given by the U.S. Department of Commerce to the country's best-run companies. Judging was based on seven criteria: leadership, quality planning, customer focus, quality management, human resource development, information and analysis, and quality achievements and results. Criner Remodeling was the sole winner in the small company category.

The Nation's 1st Certified Graduate Remodeler

Robert Criner was the first remodeler in the nation to be certified by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Remodelers Council. The Certified Graduate Remodeler (CGR) Program ensures that a remodeler has fulfilled specific educational requirements, and subscribes to a Code of Ethics based upon professional workmanship and customer satisfaction.

The Nation's 1st Graduate Master Remodelor

The Graduate Master Remodeler allows CGRs to attain further recognition for educational excellence and longevity in the remodeling industry. In 2008, Robert Criner became the nation's first Graduate Master Remodeler.

Certified Green Professional

In 2008, Robert Criner successfully completed all the requirements to earn the NAHB's Certified Green Professional (CGP) designation. The CGP designation is designed by the NAHB to teach building industry professionals strategies for incorporating green building principles into homes using cost-effective and affordable options.

Recipient of the National Master Design Award

The design portion was extremely helpful in deciding layout, colors and materials. The crew working on our renovation were very accomodating and knowledgeable. I'm impressed that Criner Remodeling keeps their crew on a project until it is completed instead of pulling their crews to work on other jobs. Reputation, expertise and quality. A very well run organization. Cathy M.

In planning a remodel of our master bath and adding a walk-in closet to the outside of our home, our tension was running high as we contemplated which contractor to hire. Many times with past projects, something would usually come up and there would be disappointment. After our initial contact with Criner Remodeling, from that first call until the end of the project, we could not be more thrilled with our experience. All expectations were laid out ahead of time from selection of materials and finishes to a detailed budget. Everyone we had contact with from the office staff to our Project Manager, Tony Domingos, were polite, knowledgeable, and extremely capable at their jobs. Communication was immediate either by phone or email. Tony was on the job promptly every day without fail, checking in with us in case there were questions, pleasantly whistling while he worked, supervising all trade contractors, and thoroughly cleaning up every evening (even vaccuming). There was absolutely no stress on our part throughout the entire remodel. We were contacted several times afterward to check to make sure we were satisfied with everything. I would not hesitate to use Criner in the future or to recommend them.

Ben Rooker was exceptional as the initial contact. Very polite, knowledgeable, and not at all pushy. Ebony Stephenson was also a delight to work with. She listened to my thoughts and ideas and made excellent suggestions. She was very patient as I picked out finishes, meeting me in showrooms, and was open when I wanted to make changes along the way. Terry Thomas was always pleasant, available and informative when I called with questions and came out several times to check in that all was going as planned. Lastly, I cannot say enough about Tony Domingos. I was so dreading a long project with my home being upside down and having people in an out. My fears were unwarranted with Tony. He was here promptly every morning, worked hard all day, was usually heard pleasantly whistling to himself, cleaned up thoroughly and was overall a pleasure to have around. His attention to detail and quality of craftsmanship could not be beat. Thank you, Tony, for a job well done, above and beyond expectations!

Comment Why Us? Newport News, VA Apr 18, 2013

Quick response with good communication, no high pressure sales, confidence with process after home visit and sit-down discussions with Ben and Mr. Criner. Also, the fact that one lead would be on my job the entire time and would be there personally every day to manage trade contractors while they worked.

Comment Area Of Satisfaction Newport News, VA Apr 18, 2013

The fact that things were all arranged in advance, from final design choices to scheduling, to budget. No surprises or add-ons unless initiated by me after the fact. Friendliness of everyone I had contact with at Criner. Lastly, the attention to detail and outstanding craftsmanship by Tony and trade contractors.

Comment Why Us? Yorktown, VA Mar 23, 2013

We had several bad experiences in the past with other contracting companies. Since we have been with Criner Remodeling, we have been very happy. We found that the finished projects look great and if we have any problem at all, they stand behind their work 100%.

This was our sixth major remodeling contract with Criner Remodeling. We have been completely satisfied with each project. Years ago we saw that Criner Remodeling received many awards and that helped us decide to use them for the first time. We have been pleased ever since.

Comment Area Of Satisfaction Yorktown, VA Mar 23, 2013

Criner Remodeling found a garage floor covering that is durable and does not peel or flake under the car tire tracks. They also found a creative solution to hide the air handler, hot water heater, and storage by enclosing them in closets with louvered doors to allow for air circulation. They also found ways to properly seal our existing garage doors to keep debris from funneling into the garage area. The garage is not only functional, it actually looks like a room.

Tony Domingoes was fantastic, as usual, as our project manager. Ben Rooker and Terry Thomas are truly the best at what they do in design and production, respectively. And thank you Robert Criner for conducting a final walk through with us in order for us to work together on what should be on the closeout punchlist.

We were highly pleased with our Home Remodeling experience with Criner Remodeling. www.crinerremodeling.com/ We found out about them through other work in Marlbank Cove-- their reputation developed over the last 35 years is well deserved. Their recent recognition at the national level gives both us or any future buyers of our home complete confidence in the additions. They are clearly a company that can handle all sizes and complexities of projects. Our remodel wasn’t very extensive but their expertise and know-how headed off potential problems and resulted in an outstanding design and project execution. Also, little details like having a consistent on-site project manager/lead carpenter made a huge difference. Their conscientious respect for us and our home, site cleanliness, attention to not only the big picture but also the details kept us extremely satisfied throughout. When an issue was encountered, the Criner team guided us through it with absolute integrity and transparency. Their agenda was ours and our long term satisfaction, not just trying to talk us into something that might work better in the short term.

Michael Guinn was the lead carpenter on our job. He was always professional, courteous, punctual. Michael worked very hard to make sure we were satisfied with the work done and his work was always first-rate. We could not have been happier having him on the job.

The people on the remodel. Everyone we worked with at Criner was a person of integrity. Problems were dealt with quickly and in the open. It was obvious to us from the beginning that our satisfaction was their main concern.

We found Criner Remodeling through the Hampton Roads Magazine where they received a Gold Level award in the "Best Bath Remodeling". We interviewed a few other remodeling companies before we choose Criner. We were very impressed with their proposals for our additional bathroom, and had many feasible options to choose from. We were very satisfied with the quality of the materials used and the expertise of the carpenters. They were all efficient, friendly, clean, and very trust worthy individuals. They exceeded our expectations from the beginning till completion. The final product is exactly what we wanted. We couldn't be happier with this experience, and highly recommend Criner Remodeling for any remodeling needs.

I can and DO recommend Criner Remodeling to any of my friends who require such survices. I know I can depend on top notch workmanship, professionalism, and care. Michael! We appreciated Ben's care in keeping our son-in-law apprised of the design .Thanks to Paul and Lorenzo for the ride out to Langley to haul the furniture I purchased back to my home.

Comment Area Of Satisfaction Poquoson, VA Mar 09, 2012

It is always unsettling to have a bunch of other people occupying one's home. However, in the case of Michael and his crew, the pluses cancelled out the minuses. Michael was thoughtful, compassionate and kept my home cleaner than I do, myself. One day he was waiting for someone to do something so he quietly shined the washing machine. ..typical...The crew was quiet (as they could be) and always courteous, friendly, and always kind.

I am very pleased with my experience with Criner Remodeling. Their clever design approach for removing the existing walls and supporting the roof truss loads provided a very clean design for the Great Room. We were very comfortable with their staff in our home, and we did not have any concerns about leaving the house while they were there. Another strong point is that their Certified Remodeler conducts periodic, independent inspections of all completed work to ensure that their high standards are maintained. Therefore, I did not need to check up on their work. The house was always left clean and ready for use at the end of each work day. Once they started the project, they worked on-site until the project was completed.

I contacted Criner Remodeling after a tree fell on my house during Hurricane IRENE, damaging both the exterior and interior. They were responsive to my immediate need and returned to make permanent repairs in a reasonable time thereafter. They stayed true to their schedule and the promise to stay on the job until complete (I never had to wonder when the contractor was going to come back). They were thorough and comprehensive with the itemized work to be done, and they went through the work plan with me line by line. Also, they tried to work to make the whole repair as convenient for me as they could. I thought Criner Remodeling did a first class job.

About GuildQuality and our Guildmembers

Homebuilders, remodelers, real estate developers and home services companies pay GuildQuality for customer surveying and performance reporting. We refer to these companies as GuildQuality Members, Guildmembers, or members.

Our service helps Guildmembers monitor customer satisfaction and -- if they choose to publish survey feedback on our public website at guildquality.com -- articulate the quality of their service for prospective customers.

All of the Guildmember information we publish at guildquality.com has been provided to us either by the member (such as pictures of work and biographical information) or by their customers via one of our surveys (customer comments, performance summaries, and reviews).

Surveys, Comments and Reviews

All of the customer feedback that we publish is derived from the customers we survey. Our Guildmembers provide us with their customers' contact information, we conduct the surveys, they receive the feedback, and -- if they have chosen to make their feedback public -- the member's performance report is automatically updated to reflect the response. Members may choose to publish a summary of either all of their feedback or their most recent twelve months of feedback.

In addition to average performance ratings and survey statistics, GuildQuality also publishes two types of customer commentary: Comments and Reviews.

A comment has been provided by a survey respondent in response to any one of the survey questions we ask, and a member may or may not choose to publish it. Often customers provide unsolicited testimonials or compliments, and members can choose to share these comments in their published performance report.

Many Guildmembers choose to participate in our formal review process. These members have added an additional question on their survey: "If you'd like to provide a public review of your experience working with the Guildmember, please share it here." In contrast to comments, which a member selects to have published, we publish all reviews, provided they are at least 30 words long. With each review, we include a one to five star rating provided by the survey respondent.

Important Information about choosing a Builder, Remodeler, or Contractor
